Destination Monticello (Florida)


The scenic, landscaped corridor linking historic districts in Monticello and Tallahassee is best known as Fred Mahan Drive. Easily the most beautiful 25 miles in Florida, it started as a tribal path and became the Old Spanish Trail. It is now US 90. The highway background, middle and foreground plantings consist of pyracantha, arbor vitae, flowering crape myrtle, ligustrum, and some palm trees.

Cascades Park: Smokey Hollow - Cascades Park in Tallahassee, Florida features structures called "Spirit Houses" that resemble the shotgun-style homes that once filled the Smokey Hollow community. Students at Lively Technical Center are helping to preserve the history as well, renovating an old barbershop. The barbershop is expected to be moved to Cascades Park in summer, 2014.

Since its opening more than six decades ago, Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida has grown from a small facility into one of the most famous football stadiums in the nation. Due to increased fan support, the stadium has been expanded many times. Expansions in 1954, 1961, and 1970 increased the seating capacity to 40,500 and again in 1982 and in the 1990s to its present capacity of over 82,000. FYI - Doak Campbell Stadium is the largest building in the U.S. constructed of bricks.
