Unknown Child victim of the Titanic disaster, Fairview Lawn cemetery, Halifax NS, Canada Since Identified as Eino Viljami Panula, a member of a Finnish family which died in the disaster. He was 13 months old when the Titanic sank on April 15 1912.

Etched into a sheer rock wall in Lucerne, Switzerland, a lion, mortally wounded from a spear, lays peacefully in a cavern, life draining from his pained body. Swiss guards died gallantly defending the French royal family in the Bastille uprising. An officer in the guard was home in Switzerland on leave when the riot occurred. Some years later he built this moving monument in honour of his lost comrades marking it Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti (“To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss”).

The word “monster” originally meant “deformed”. A monster could be a two headed calf, conjoined twins or a hideously deformed human infant. It was only in the 20th century that monster came to mean any cruel or alien creature.
