This image shows “The Grand Staircase" of Sydney's Grand Queen Victoria Building. This building, now affectionately known as the QVB, was designed by George McRae and completed in 1898, replacing the original Sydney markets on the site. Built as a monument to the long reigning monarch, construction took place in dire times, as Sydney was in a severe recession.

Loretto Chapel, Santa Fe, NM. In 1878 the nuns needed steps to the choir loft. They prayed to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. Within days, a mysterious man showed up with a donkey and a few tools, looking for work. They put him to work on the staircase, Using a saw & a square, the carpenter built this incredible spiral staircase. When the job was complete, and the nuns tried to pay him, he was gone. (The 1963 movie, Lilies of the Field, is based on this story.)
