"Zenker's diverticulum is a pouch that develops in the lower pharyngeal wall above the UES. With every swallow, food can get stuck in the pouch. The pouch presses on the upper esophagus, making it difficult for solid foods to pass. Other dangers include: weight loss, day time & night time regurgitation (due to supine position), & aspiration pnumonia. Cause is unknown, thought to be due to a weak spot in the lower pharyngeal wall."
