The Houses of Parliament or Palace of Westminster, has occupied the same spot since 1016, when Canute the Great built a royal palace on the site. The oldest surviving part of the building is Westminster Hall built by William the Conqueror’s son in 1097 after moving from the Tower of London. It served as the country’s highest court until mid 19th c., incl the trials of Charles I, Anne Boleyn + Guy Fawkes, who was tried for treason in the Gunpowder Plot.
The Athabasca Glacier is one of the six principal 'toes' of the Columbia Icefield, located in the Canadian Rockies. The glacier currently recedes at a rate of 2–3 metres (6.6–9.8 ft) per year and has receded more than 1.5 km (0.93 mi) in the past 125-years and lost over half of its volume. The glacier moves down from the icefield at a rate of several centimetres per day.
