Tapio Wirkkala (2 June 1915– 19 May 1985) was a Finnish designer and sculptor, a major figure of post-war design. His work ranges from plastic ketchup bottles and metalware to glass, ceramics and plywood in a range of styles. This piece is laminated and carved plywood.
I don't know what this is supposed to be, but I saw it and wondered what one would end up with if they glued up a woodturning blank like this and left the top mostly untouched, so as to show off the sharp angles and lines, but turned the lower two-thirds to make a turned vessel.

Woodturning by Wayne Hall I have had a similar idea. I think I would like to try filling in the gaps with smaller circles or other geometric shapes. Also, I think I would like to stain or paint the underside of the outer discs so that the interior is more visible, i.e. provide a better contrast between outer surface and the interior.
