Ultra-Lightweight Backpacking Spice Kit (only 1oz.) Helpful comment by thatoneguydavid: "I folded a piece of paper in half, put about a table spoon of the spice in the fold and pushed the open end of the straw in to it like a bulldozer. It took about 45 sec. to fill one."

TipNut - Rub a bar of soap over the itch. I just tried this (Ivory soap) and the relief was near instant. I used a dry bar of soap directly on the skin, but I also have notes that you can spritz bite with water and then run bar of soap over area–or use a wet bar of soap.

Mosquito Trap Boil 1 C of water & completely dissolve 1 C sugar in it. Remove from the heat & stir in 2 C cool water. Syrup must be cooler than 90 degrees F. Add 1 tsp active dry yeast. Cut top of a 2 liter bottle to make a funnel. Put syrup in the bottom part of the bottle & insert funnel. Seal the 2 parts of the bottle with the tape. Put black paper around the bottle since mosquitoes like dark places. The fermenting yeast will release carbon dioxide and attract mosquitoes to trap.

Crisco Everlasting Candle Open a can of Crisco. The bigger the can, the better. Insert the candle wick into the center of the can of Crisco. If the can has a large diameter, multiple wicks can be inserted. Leave a quarter of an inch of wick showing above the Crisco to make sure the flame is a manageable size.

Miniature Marshmallow Shooters The construction is simple and straightforward. No directions here, but you can get the jist of it by looking at the picture. It's all made from 1/2" PVC pipe and connecters, with a quick blast of spray paint to pretty it up (and make sure everyone can keep track of which gun is theirs!) BE SURE TO CLEAN UP THE CAMPSITE AFTER THE GAME!

DIY Fly Repellent - Saturate a clean cloth with one of the following oils: Lavender is particularly effective against flies. Dilute the following with water when used: citronella, eucalyptus, penny-royal, peppermint (likely more effective against mosquitoes but also considered to work against horse-flies), and lemongrass. Place the cloth in the tin and shut the lid. Allow to sit for 24 hours.Replenish the oil after each use; once open to the air, the strength weakens and needs to be topped up.

My go-to favorite is one my father used to make for me. It is so ridiculously simple a recipe is not really needed. In a coffee mug (he always used a coffee mug, so I do too…), place 2 warm hardboiled eggs with a few tablespoons of butter and a good amount of salt and pepper. With a fork and knife, coarsely cut up the eggs and their warm insides will melt the butter.

Quinoa Patties "These make for one of my favorite snacks and sides. They fill you up, they taste incredible, they can be portable, and they are healthy."

Cheesy Quinoa Mac & Cheese This is a protein packed alternative to Mac N’ Cheese, and well…Delicious! Quinoa, pronounced ”KEEN-WAH!” packs a powerful nutritional punch. It has protein and fiber to keep you satisfied, and quinoa contains ALL the amino acids as well. You could add any veggie- NOTE: If you feel you are after the really “cheesy”-mac n’ cheese vibe… you may want to have it noted to add a bit more cheese than what I use.

dry shampoo, a little expensive but works so good. for when there's no stream nearby to wash in.

Lightweight water tote from a 2 – 2.5 gallon ziplock inside a string shopping bag. The bag can be partially opened to form a pour spout. Hang it from a tree. For even greater convenience, you can have running water by clipping a 3/8" vinyl tube to the inside of the bag and siphoning the water out.To stop the water flow, raise the free end of the tube above the water level in the bag. I carry a spare ziplock bag, but usually I get at least two seasons on a bag before it wears out.
