The Misses Dene, c.1893. Dorothy Dene, on the left, was the muse of Lord Leighton. She is the model for many of his paintings, including the gorgeous Flaming June. #Victorian #women #vintage #portraits

    oh love old old photos....♥

  • Jessica Cangiano

As do I. They are the most incredible windows into the past.

  • Eve-Reine

    yes and often moving...

  • Faith Rudd Trimmer

It's hard to tell but it looks like the little chap is dressed in Russian peasant clothes which were fairly fashionable amongst Russian middle and upper classes at this time wishing to reconnect with their roots.

  • Jessica Cangiano

Excellent eye, dear Faith. Andrei Karelin was a Russian photographer, so it would make perfect sense if these two lovely people were Russian as well themselves. I don't know much about him beyond that though.

The hat, the hair, it's all spectacular! #Victorian #vintage #Marie_de_Gary #hats #hair #fashion

    waow ! :-)

  • Jessica Cangiano

It is incredible! I can't help but think, that the weight of that much hair (assuming it was all her natural hair - and given the era, I don't doubt that it very easily could have) might have caused her headaches though.

  • Eve-Reine

yes bad headaches , i could not wear my hair like this....

  • Annette Jones

They did buy fake add-on hair, I recently pinned a period ad for it :)

  • Jessica Cangiano

@Annette, I'll be sure to check it out, thanks! I've seen a few ads for hair pieces from the era (and earlier) too. It wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility for the time especially that the hair seen here really was her own (lucky lady, if such was the case!).

Read the photo-biography of Miss Austen years ago...Amazing...

  • Jessica Cangiano

I second that to one and all! I'm a big fan of Ms. Austen's photography and am so happy that many of her works were able to be rediscovered during the 1950 and preserved for many generations to come.

  • Debbie Archibald

A new discovery for me! I'll be looking into Ms. Austen's life and photos! Thank you!
