The kitsch crowd puts owls on everything these days, but how well do we actually know these wise, old birds? Barn owlettes, for instance, are nicer to each other than human siblings! Ok, ok that’s not terribly impressive ... but some owls are inspiring quieter airplane designs and the Blakiston’s fish owl breeds in temps of 30 below, scoops up salmon 3x its own weight, and is so big it’s sometimes mistaken for a bear. www.onearth.org/
