The Purple Gang received its colorful nickname from a conversation between two Hastings Street shopkeepers. Both shops had been shoplifted and vandalised by Jewish kids in Eastern Market. Most of the Purples, Russian Jewish immigrants, who worked to scrape out a living for themselves and their families in the Jewish quarter in Detroit’s lower east .They quickly moved from street crime to armed robbery, hijacking, and extortion.They remained prominent in Detroit until 1935.
