Some organizations like @nrt_kenya don't believe that you have to choose between conservation and indigenous traditions . A community conservancy is a community-based organization created to support community-owned land and improve the community's livelihoods while still conserving and protecting natural resources and wildlife. To address the issue of depleting grasslands for grazing they've set aside "grass banks". These areas are reserved for wildlife to graze but can be used by…

Land privatization was always a practice that I was conflicted about when I worked in international development. The multilateral development banks get off on that ish tho. I'd be sent down by the Bank to help the government provide land titles to people in rural areas where land had been passed down from generation to generation without a problem until we arrived. The land titles were sometimes a precursor to a pressure the people to sell in the future or a land grab for a national…

I did a quick IG search for #masai and some of the tourist photos made me cringe (go see for yourself and tell me what you think). When a Masai boy has proven himself to be a man and an adept warrior the adumu dance is performed as a right of passage. The higher he jumps the stronger the guy is and the more desirable match he can choose. From childhood the men carry walking sticks for self defense against wild animals and people alike. It's rare to ever see a #Maasai man without his stick…

What responsibility do the poor bear in environmentalism and conservation (typically special interest pet projects of the rich) ? Traditionally the Maasai people would wander the land as their cattle grazed. The cattle were and still are a source of wealth and income in these communities. Conversationists and governments have pushed the Maasai off their traditional pastoral grazing lands to small privatized plots of land subdividing the land size for cattle herding reduced the number of…

I want to kick off this series on Kenya and Tanzania with a discussion on tourism's impact on indigenous cultures and ways of life: Having seen the Maasai so prominently heralded as a symbol of Kenya and African pride (the Maasai shield is on the Kenyan flag) I'd assumed they were a dominant ethnic group. In reality although these nomadic people once occupied most of western Kenya and parts of Tanzania disease mass evictions by the British and civil war reduced them to only 0.5% of the…

If I'm an advocate for anything it's to move. As far as you can as much as you can. Across the ocean or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else's shoes or at least eat their food #AnthonyBourdain

Yesterday @1thatgotawayy posted a Tamela Jenkins quote: "#Activism without #education is just performance." I wholeheartedly agree. You cannot rely on social media and memes for anything more than a superficial understanding of complex issues. So I wanted to share some of the sources that I use to keep me informed about the world: 1. The Takeaway- A daily news podcast that gives in-depth news and analysis of national and international news from diverse perspectives without the divisiveness…

When I heard #Trump refer to #immigrants (MS-13 or not) as "animals" all kinds of red flags went off in my head. Language is a useful tool for dehumanization. In Less Than Human David Livingstone Smith argues that dehumanization opens the door for cruelty and genocide. Excerpts: "Thinking sets the agenda for action and thinking of humans as less than human paves the way for atrocity. The Nazis were explicit about the status of their victims. They were Untermenschen subhumans and as such…

Today the day after moved its embassy to the hotly contested city of #Jerusalem and Isreali troops killed 58 Palestinian protestors #Palestinians commemorate The #Nakba- "the Catastrophe. May 15th is the day they were expelled from their homeland to create the state of Israel. Millions of Palestinians became permanent #refugees. A white woman whom I'd consider an ally DM-ed me and said she wanted to order one of my shirts but wasn't sure if it would be appropriate. Was she woke enough? Could white people even be woke she asked. Lawrence Ware wrote that "[white people] can be allies and accomplices in the fight against oppression in the same way that black folks can be agents and accomplices in promoting promulgating and protecting white supremacy... To be woke is to be malleableone can always be more critical more…

"I don't see race. I just couldn't understand why people would segregated themselves based on religion or ethnicity in college. It still makes no sense to me" said the wealthy woman sitting next to @kash.ia and I. Instinctively our bodies stiffened instinctively at this casual dismissal by a woman who's wedding ring could have put us both through college. We were at the #embraceambition summit held by @toryburchfoundation where just that morning @yeonmi_park had given a powerful speech…
