"Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care." ~Theodore Roosevelt. "If you have a child's heart, you have his head." ~Flip Flippen, creator of the Capturing Kids' Hearts program

It really just comes down to this. Something to keep in mind for all teachers! Students know if you don't like them. They know.

Children learn best when they like their teacher and they think heir teacher likes them. I ought to print this and keep it by my desk.

This is so true. It also reminds me of two of my favorite quotes: 1. "Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care." ~Theodore Roosevelt, and 2. "If you have a child's heart, you have his head." ~Flip Flippen, creator of the Capturing Kids' Hearts program

Good parent visual for parent/teacher conferences -- and for the kids!

Good parent visual for parent/teacher conferences -- and for the kids! Check out the website for more

Good parent visual for parent/teacher conferences -- and for the kids! Wish I had had this for parent conferences this year.

Why can't I skip my 20 minutes of reading tonight?- good parent visual for parent/teacher conferences.

yet sadly, many of students who read more than 20 minutes per day will not report that reading in their reading log because the children of those parents with a functional literacy level of the T.V. Guide will bully them for it. quit teaching your kids to bully intelligent people, be literate by choice & by example.

Why Can't I Skip My 20 Minutes of Reading Tonight? Miller discussed reading logs and how they are often times a joke. Instead of focusing on the "20 minutes a night" we need to incorporate it into our daily routines so we can know they are reading, as Miller did in her room.

READ 20 MINUTES A NIGHT: Good parent visual for parent/teacher conferences -- and for the kids!

As you know, your child has nightly homework to read at home. They have a reading log to fill out each night, that THEY can fill in with their book title and minutes read. Their job is to read a MINIMUM of 20 minutes a night. Research shows that children who read at least 20 minutes a night often perform on or above grade level in reading and language arts. This can include: - Reading to a parent, sibling, grandparent, relative, etc. - Someone reading to them. - Reading a book, magazine, newspaper, etc. Tips: - If you don't sit and read WITH them, have them read in a room where you can see that they are reading. Third graders still need to be monitored. - Have them read out loud to you, or just out loud to themselves. - Alternate reading out loud and silently. Good readers need to practice reading out loud as well. - Break up the time into smaller chunks. - Read more on nights that you have more time to make up for the nights that you are busy and reading time is cut short. - Ask your child about what they read every few pages or chapter. - Take turns reading to each other. - Have them bring one of my books home that they are reading in school. That's perfectly fine with me. I feel reading every night is so, so important. Third grade is a crucial grade where we really bump up the reading rigor. They are expected to read for longer amounts of time, and we really work on building stamina. They also need to read for a variety of purposes and a variety of text genres. Below are some visuals and links to articles on the importance of reading. 1. Reasons to Read to Your Elementary School Child 2. Why Read 20 Minutes a Day? 3. Practice Makes Perfect, Especially in Reading 4. 8 Ways Parents Discourage Their Kids From Reading Happy Reading!

Image Source for Cartoon As a tutor, I've heard the excuses about reading with your child each night from parents.   "We just don't have enough time."  "She just fights me!"   "It's too overwhelming for us." My family has the same struggles too!  I wanted a hand out that I could give parents when I hear these excuses from frustrated parents and to help remind my own family that reading is supposed to be fun!  I went to the Just for Tutors group on Facebook and brainstormed with all of them on ideas for reading.  We came up with one amazing list! What parents don't realize is that 90% of it is just making it a habit!  No nagging, arguing, or the likes of this when it comes to reading.  It may take weeks of modeling reading before your child will budge on their end.  The child is testing you to see where the limit is when it comes to reading.  Even if your child has a learning disability, you still need to be reading to them each night, any type of reading helps! (Okay, I am starting to climb on a soap box instead of just sharing with you!  This topic really gets me going these days...) The key to success with kids?  Lighten up!  Have some fun and make reading a useful, delightful experience for everyone involved. You can download our list of ideas for free right here and find more goodies below!  We've come up with links and resources galore for you to look at, to pin, bookmark, and save so that you are prepared when the excuses start rolling in from parents, students, or yourself. {wink} Reading Ideas for Parents $0.00 Why can't you skip reading every night?  It adds up!  Look at these statistics.... image source Primary Junction made this awesome printable with different ideas for building a reader at home.  She has an entire set of printables about reading.  You could pair with our printable and really have loads of ideas!  Click here to download. Weather

Introduce how we measure the weather, including wind, rain, and temperature. Make a poster with the class and ask if they already know how each measurement tool works. (Physical geography) -EG

During a weather lesson, you might want to know how exactly to measure different things that deal with weather. This chart in particular, gives a great start to some of your most basic tools that are used to measure weather. You could add on others!

Weather tools. Could totally adapt this to just "Tools to Measure"... going to do that for upcoming Measurement lessons!! Yay for Anchor Charts! :)

This anchor chart can be used to teach students about weather tools. Specifically what there names are and how they are used. CR

Tools to Measure Weather Chart

We just began our unit on weather this week. I have to admit that it is not really my favorite science unit (shhh, don't tell the kids!). In the past it has lacked something... I couldn't figure it out, but I wasn't pleased. I want to LOVE this unit this year. This means it's up for revamp! Yay! And new activities! Whoop Woop! More experiments! Boom! And, this year in addition to the unit on weather, my class is going to put in a musical called The Weather Show (it's a Bad Wolf production. If you haven't checked them out and you want to do EASY musicals with your kids, you should! Their stuff rocks!) in late May. So to spice up my weather unit and help with the learning of the musical, I decided to teach my weather unit in order of the topics in the songs in the musical. Im so organized, right?! Lol! So, up first: meteorologist and their tools. We discussed what a meteorologist does, watched a weather report, read Gail Gibbons Weather Forecasting and made a few anchor charts. Up next: Barometers and air pressure. That takes us to today! Have you searched barometers on Pinterest lately?  I found a great Bill Nye explanation of barometers and air pressure. Jackpot! I also scored with a DIY barometer how to (thanks Scholastic!).  Now... Can 1st graders do it?? You bet! Take a look! Barometer supplies at the ready! Gathering the necessities. Cutting the balloon to fit. Stretching it over the jar. Making the tracking triangle and attaching the straw. Barometers at the ready! Taking our measurements. 1st grade scientists hard at work! We took measurements four times during the day. Each time recording where the straw was and what kind of weather was happening. By the afternoon the straw had moved ever so slightly with the warming temps and the sun coming out (it was overcast when we started).  Air pressure is a pretty tricky subject for kiddos, so we were really focusing on understanding that it is the changes in weather that effect the air pressure, not so much the high/low aspects of air pressure. This experiment did just what I wanted and the kids had a blast! Next week we wil focus on rain and evaporation! Have you tackled a weather unit with your students yet?

Ask each child to bring in a small framed family photo...love it! What a fun way to make a classroom feel homey! :) gives students a sense of responsibilities to their parents while at school too!

This website has some unique classroom ideas including this one where students bring in a family/friend framed photo at the beginning of the year so they have a little piece of home with them while they are at school. This is especially great for younger students who might be homesick for their first year of school.

Have the students bring in a framed picture of their family to make a display for the classroom. I could also include a class family picture from the first day and a framed picture of Jesus in the classroom as the teacher is reading to her class.

Each child brings in a small framed photo that's important to them...love this for making the class belong to everyone!

I LOVE this!! Kids bring in a picture frame of their families and the classroom is decorated with them! How sweet to connect home and school! classroom-decoration

Each child brings in a small framed photo that's important to them. OR Take each child's picture at the beginning of the year. I sit the frames around the room for all to see. Then when we have excellence fair in our room, we sit the frame on their desks.

Classroom family photo display option.

I put a lot of thought into my classroom environment and relish the opportunity to go to other teacher's classrooms or centres to have a sneaky peak at how they have set up their environment and steal a few ideas. One centre I visited a while ago was Bear Park at Mount Eden in Auckland, New Zealand and their beautiful environment is one which continues to inspire me.  Here are some pics that will hopefully inspire you too... The entrance way included philosophy statements, photos of the teachers and books containing current learning stories The children's family photos This is one idea that I incorporated into my classroom straight away and now, at the beginning of every year,  I ask each child to bring in a framed photo of their family.  Over the years I have witnessed children holding, kissing and talking to their family photos emphasising how important this little piece of home is to children who have just started school.  Things I love about Bear Park's space: The environment welcomes you as soon as you walk in the door and is reflective of the children, their families and the teachers who spend their time there.  Children's work is beautifully displayed in a way that communicates that their work is important and valued. Materials and resources are presented to children in a way that provokes their curiosity and creativity. But most of all - the time and care that has gone into developing such a lovely space for children to play in!
