I've always loved this picture because when it was taken Abe wanted to smile, but the photographer said that it wouldn't look very good, but you can still see a hint of a smile there :)
A German two-hand sword for the field, c. 1520-30. Blade 132 cm. Overall length 180 cm. Two-handed swords like these were given to limited numbers of specialist infantry troops — for leading assaults against pike blocks, defending banners, or other unusual duties.
