Although no pictures of him exist when he was young, I imagine he looked something like this while gaining an education at Aunt Mary's estate. And the gentleman's suit he packed (truth) when he went to America, would have looked similar to this attire

The Kalmar Nyckel is a replica of an Old World colonial ship that sailed from Sweden to the New World in 1638. The ship was originally built by the Dutch. The passengers on the Kalmar Nyckel established the first permanent European settlement in the colony of “New Sweden” (Wilmington, Delaware). It made four round-trip crossings of the Atlantic, which is more than any other ship of its era. Photo by Dave Wright

Frontier fur traders. One of the earliest and most important industries in North America, the American fur trade played a major role in the development of the United States and Canada for more than 300 years. Involving half a dozen European nations and numerous American Indian tribes, the fur trade began in the 1500s. Native Americans traded furs for supplies such as tools, weapons, and horses. The furs, in turn, were utilized to make hats, coats, and blankets, which were very popular in Europe.

Lesley Graham in a real person and friend of Allan's from Irvinestown (this is not a photo of him). His family lived somewhere near the Hamiltons. In the 200-year-old letter collection I based Once Upon an Irish Summer on, he was in Philadelphia the same time as Allen. He did indeed return to Ireland for a short time, and then returned to Philadelphia and died there within a year or two. I've found no records on him anywhere else so I created his character with leeway. I love Lesley!
