William Daniell. Artist and engraver of Indian scenes. Orphaned early, he was adopted by his uncle, Thomas Daniell, a landscape painter, and taken as his assistant to Indian, returning to London in 1794. Died at home at 135 St Pancras Way.
This gold medallion was made in Persia in 1641 and presented by Shah Safi of Iran in tribute to the Russian Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich in that same year. Check out that embossed ground worked with flat chasing-- and all those rubies and emeralds set in tall mounts. Turquoise and glass pieces also grace the surface of this jewel, which originally served as the crosspiece of a bridle for the Tsar's horse.
