If Malibu Beach comes to your mind first, when you think about beach vacations in California, you should probably not venture out to the Lost Coast. But if you prefer Alaska to Baywatch, this is your spot. Even the road builders of the Wild West steered clear of this coast, steep and rugged as it is. All the better for us! As well as for sea lions - herds of them, black bears and marijuana farmers who peacefully cohabit in this wilderness.

Looking to get away from it all? Consider the Lost Coast drive in Northern California, ruggedly beautiful from Black Sand Beaches to Giant Redwood tress.

Humboldt's Lost Coast Goes BIG!

Giant sleeper wave at Shelter Cove: Humboldt County, CA. Just returned from a week long trip in Humboldt County. On Saturday, we visited Shelter Cove where 20 foot waves were crashing into the Lost Coast. This giant was easily 25-30 feet... one of the largest waves I've ever seen! Of course... what would a photo from Humboldt County be without Hippies. Notice the dreadlock silhouettes! I will upload more photos from the trip over the next several days.

Black Sands Beach

A beach well worth exploring This is a large, mostly west-facing, black sand beach with offshore reefs just north of the town of Shelter Cove. Black Sands Beach is a picturesque and relaxing. The black sand that covers the beach and has given the spot its name is very unusual. The beach is a 3.5-mile stretch of coastline 45 miles south of Eureka in Northern California. Directions: As visitors decend down the road into Shelter Cove they will need to turn right onto Beach Rd, which dead ends…
