We have a lot to learn from Hunter, who recently lost an arm in a shark attack: "So I kind of have two options -- I can try to live my life the way I was and make an effort to do that even though I don't have an arm or I can kind of just let this be completely debilitating," he said. "Out of those two, there's really only one that I would choose to do and that's to try and fight and live a normal life with the cards I've been dealt," he said.

(Stroke) The diving bell and the butterfly. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book.

"Not only was I exiled, paralyzed, mute, half deaf, deprived of all pleasures & reduced to the existence of a jellyfish, but I was also horrible to behold. There comes a time when the heaping up of calamities brings on uncontrollable nervous laughter - when, after a final blow from fate, we decide to treat it all as a joke." The Diving Bell & the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death, Jean Dominique Bauby. Pinner writes: "Beautiful memoir. If you don't read anything else, read this."

Athlete Aimee Mullins “Born without fibulae in both legs, Aimee’s medical prognosis was discouraging; she was told she would never walk, and would likely spend the rest of her life using a wheelchair. In an attempt for an outside chance at independent mobility, doctors amputated both her legs below the knee on her first birthday. The decision paid off. By age two, she had learned to walk on prosthetic legs, and spent her childhood doing the usual athletic activities of her peers: swimming, biking, softball, soccer, and skiing, always alongside “able-bodies” kids.”
