I actually found my tattoo idea in picture form!
Kraken - Recognised for modern movies, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, but originally, The Kraken belongs to the cold Norwegian sea. It was first said to be seen in the early 1700's. It was originally said to be in the shape of a crab and the size of an island. Other descriptions say that it was a giant octopus, that dragged ships down to the bottom of the sea! (Listverse 2012)
Colossal octopus by Pierre Denys de Montfort. Kraken is a legendary sea monster of giant proportions that is said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland. The legend may have originated from sightings of giant squid that are estimated to grow to 13–15 m (40–50 ft) in length, including the tentacles. The sheer size and fearsome appearance attributed to the kraken have made it a common ocean-dwelling monster in various fictional works.

From Voyages made in the years 1788 and 1789 from China to the northwest coast of America. Italian. The artists would often draw from rough description rather than direct reference...or they'd draw something upon first encountering it (in this case I'm assuming it was a Narwhal or a seal).
https://flic.kr/p/9Gg5Wu | I. Grampusa Mostro Marino II. Vitello Marino III. Goulù Mostro de Mari d'America. | Three monstruous sea creatures or fish. One has a horn in its forehead, and another is striped and has claws. Items are numbered for identification in key at bottom of image. Book title: 'Viaggi dalla China alla costa nord-ovest d'America fatti negli anni 1788 e 1789' [Voyages made in the years 1788 and 1789 from China to the northwest coast of America. Italian] The grampus is now identified as either an orca or Grampus griseus (Risso's dolphin), but both these species have fins while this illustration does not. The vitello marino or sea calf may be a seal. The horn on the goulu would indicate that it is a narwhal, but that animal's habitat is the Atlantic Ocean. It might be Xiphias gladius, the swordfish. Text notes that these creatures were found near the entrance to Juan de Fuca Strait.John Meares made two trips to northwestern North America, one in 1786-1787 and the other in 1788-1789, both with false papers in the hope of trading for furs on lands claimed by Spain. His activities nearly sparked a war with Spain. He was also accused by his more respectable fellow mariners of having aggrandized his accomplishments. The Seirenes (or Sirens) were three sea nymphs who lured sailors to their death with a bewitching song. They were formerly handmaidens of the goddess Persephone. LIGEIA was one of the more famous sirens, whose name means “shrill” or “clear-toned”. Her color is inspired by this painting by Herbert James Draper- “Ulysses and the Sirens” Ligeia is a satin finish grayed wedgewood blue base with a strong shimmering gold highlight duochrome.
