NGC 5426 and NGC 5427, together known as Arp 271, are a pair of colliding galaxies 90 million light years away in Virgo. In most colliding galaxy pairs, the smaller galaxy is eaten by the larger one, but because these two are very similar in size, they are expected to survive and will not merge together, though they will continue to interact gravitationally for tens of millions of years.

GALAXY VS GALAXY — Behold the colliding spiral galaxies of Arp 271. Spiral galaxies NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 galaxies are quite similar. As the galaxies advance over the next tens of millions of years, their component stars are unlikely to collide, new stars will form in the bunching of gas caused by gravitational tides. A bridge of material momentarily connecting the two giants. The pair spans about 130,000 light years and lies about 90 million light-years away toward the constellation of Virgo.

In terms of direction on the sky, the pointed answer is the constellation of Perseus. That is why the meteor shower that peaked over the past few days is known as the Perseids -- the meteors all appear to come from a radiant toward Perseus.

hat on Earth is that? The Richat Structure in the Sahara Desert of Mauritania is easily visible from space because it is nearly 50 kilometers across. Once thought to be an impact crater, the Richat Structure's flat middle and lack of shock-altered rock indicates otherwise. The possibility that the Richat Structure was formed by a volcanic eruption also seems improbable because of the lack of a dome of igneous or volcanic rock. Image credit: NASA
Eye of Africa From space this mysterious depression in the Sahara Desert of Mauritania really does look like a human eye. The image to the left is the "pupil" but a visit to Google Earth zoomed out a little will reveal the cliffs that make up the rest of the eye. This natural phenomenon is actually a richat structure caused by the dome shaped symmetrical uplifting of underlying geology now made visible by millennia of erosion. Source: SantaBanta.com

Properly known as the Richat Structure, it is easy to see where its nickname comes from. Looking at it from above, it looks a lot like a big blue eye staring out of the ground.

Simeis 188 in Stars, Dust and Gas Image Credit & Copyright: Dieter Willasch (Astro-Cabinet) Explanation: When stars form, pandemonium reigns. A particularly colorful case is the star forming region Simeis 188 which houses an unusual and bright cloud arc cataloged as NGC 6559. Visible above are red glowing emission nebulas of hydrogen, blue reflection nebulas of dust, dark absorption nebulas of dust, and the stars that formed from them. The first massive stars formed from the dense gas will emit energetic light and winds that erode, fragment, and sculpt their birthplace. And then they explode. The resulting morass can be as beautiful as it is complex. After tens of millions of years, the dust boils away, the gas gets swept away, and all that is left is a naked open cluster of stars. Simeis 188 is located about 4,000 light years away and can be found about one degree northeast of M8, the Lagoon Nebula.
