At TBC, we are privileged to have Memorial Torah Scroll #529 which was written in 1832. It is one of the Torahs from the town of Ceske Budejovice, once the capitol of Southern Bohemia, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The thriving Jewish community there built an ornate synagogue in 1868. On April 18, 1942, over 900 Jews of this city were deported to death camps, & 3 months later the Nazis destroyed the synagogue. This board contains information about this historic Jewish community & Torah.

Temple B'nai Chaim
Since 1992, a memorial in the city center of České Budějovice remembers the synagogue blown up in 1942 and the murdered Jews of the city.

The Scrolls which came to Westminster Synagogue were from the two provinces of Moravia and Bohemia, with a few from the Sudetenland.

Rabbi Adam Wunder served the Ceske Budejovice synagogue from 1867-1905. He was the rabbi when the congregation constructed their beautiful and massive synagogue.
