Is this better than The Acts of King Arthur by Steinbeck, a high school English staple?
The Once and Future King by T. H. White -- retelling of the sage of King Arthur. Reading level age 18+, but I think the kids would enjoy it now. :)The world's greatest fantasy classic is "richly imagined and unfailingly eloquent and entertaining" The Once and Future King is T.H. White's masterful retelling of the saga of King Arthur, a fantasy classic as legendary as Excalibur and Camelot, and a poignant story of adventure, romance, and magic that has enchanted readers for generations.
One of the best modern King Arthur books out there. It's an abridged version of books 1-4 of the series, but the individual books have been out of print for a long, long time. A beautiful retelling of the classic story is another example of literary genius at work. The language used and the simple innocence of the language makes this a book worth close reading, and even re-reading. As one critic says, "I have laughed and loved and cried over this novel all of my life."
I'm currently reading this, totally worth reading. I love the Arthurian stories and this is my favorite so far.
T. H. White first gained popularity for his nonfiction works about the countryside of the United Kingdom, but he is best known today for his fantastic fiction. In his tetralogy The Once and Future King--called by Lin Carter in Imaginary Worlds "one of the most brilliant fantasy novels in literature"--he made the legends of King Arthur accessible for the twentieth century.

De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things) is a 1st century BC didactic poem by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius, who presents the principles of atomism; the nature of the mind and soul; explanations of sensation and thought; the development of the world and its phenomena, and a variety of celestial and terrestrial phenomena. The universe operates according to these physical principles, guided by fortuna, "chance," and not the divine intervention of the traditional Roman deities.

Reading Game of Thrones
Though the hit HBO series based on these books is very well done, it is always worth reading the original. A gritty fantasy landscape, not for the immature.
A Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin

Their fates were linked by the magical Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, nicknamed the “White City” for its majestic beauty. Architect Daniel Burnham built it; serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes used it to lure victims to his World’s Fair Hotel, designed for murder. Both men left behind them a powerful legacy, one of brilliance and energy, the other of sorrow and darkness.
