Margaine Lacroix shocked Paris in 1908 by designing this previously unseen tight, sleek style of dress. Look at how these ladies just Own what they're wearing?
Early Fashion, va va va voom style!
I came across this image, Fashionable Reader, and it struck me that the way the three ladies are walking and the expressions on their faces are wonderfully replete with personality. Old Pics Archive @oldpicsarchive 1908 Primrose, and then Rue, and who is the third? It's 1908, 13 years after the events in Prudence, so that could be Spoo? All grown up and Prim got hold of her wardrobe? Or this could be a new character (I've several coming up to be added to the crew). And those hats. I do love those hats. In this album is a selection of works by famed New York street photographer Helen Levitt, who was born 100 years
“American photography legend Helen Levitt died yesterday (May 29, 2009) at the age of 95. Best known for her witty, candid shots of everyday New York life, she was one of the most influential street photographers to date.” Pictured here: New York, circa 1940. More work here.

Helen Levitt: New York Streets 1938 to 1990s - Photographs by Helen Levitt | LensCulture
In 1940, a trio of young photographers Helen Levitt, James Agee and Janice Loeb used hidden cameras to film everyday street life in and around 110th Street and Lexington Avenue of New York’s Spanish Harlem. The footage was then edited together by Levitt and released as a short film In the Street in 1948. The film is now associated more with Levitt’s career as a street photographer than with Agee—who had an award-winning career as a novelist and screenwriter of films like The African Queen (1951) and The Night of the Hunter (1955)—or Loeb—who had a career as...

UNIT 4 - In the 1920s Flappers are women who listen to Jazz music and dance like the Charleston. Flappers also wear short and sleeve less dresses and a lot of makeup on the faces, flippers with short hair. Flappers also drink alcohol and also some cigarettes. The Flappers also changed the fashion in the 1920s.
1920-1929 "The Roaring 20's" History that influence the fashion at this time: -women are granted the right to vote (more independence) -The Charleston Dance begins the flapper style of short skirts making it easier to dance. -stock markets crash leading to the Great Depression

The Charleston Dance! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJC21zzkwoE Pictures form the 20's! Men's Styles Women's styles and the One-Piece Flappers... It's the Jazz Age well! The images above demonstrate the differences from the 1920's and decades before, from style of clothing to technology everything has changed. The jazz age sow music and how it had changed from the previously popular music "The Blues". Clothing for woman altered drastically during the 1920's, they changed their swim suits to one pieces if they were daring enough. Women moved to the city becoming more involved with the pop culture and styles such as shown above. Women did not have to work around the house and wear house clothes, instead they had to dress for the public since they'd be seen in public quite more often. The Flapper dressing for women became a huge change, with short hair and skirts you could say they had it. As for men: they idea of wearing suits and looking ritzy instead of walking around looking like a rag-a-muffin, this idea became very popular among all city men. Simply just the lifestyle changed for all as the city had recently become the big thing, the city created jobs which was a big attraction to moving to the cities. Check this out for slang from the 20's! http://local.aaca.org/bntc/slang/slang.htm
flapper girl 1920's bridal attire Nancy Cunard.she devoted her life to fight against racism and fascism going against her family's traditional values.a muse to several great literary and artistic minds in the early 20th century. Clara Bow.in this photo her clothes and make-up represent every change that came about in 1920's fashion. liberal women embracing 20's fashion I thought i would make another post of vintage photos but this turned out to be mostly about the 1920's. In that decade women gave up their constricting dressing styles. In 1920 the Nineteenth Amendment gave most women the right to vote in the US. Though India had to wait till 1950,the 2nd wave of feminism was happening around this time, for this to happen, mainly since it was a colonial state till 1947. I personally love the hats from any era but these were bold style statements. Imagine how sensational it was that you could see women's bare legs out in the public for the first time in centuries. Women became more active and hence needed more practical clothing. Coco Chanel was the most influential figure in fashion embracing short hair, incorporating men's clothes in a female wardrobe and discarding the corset. Elsa Schiaparelli is one key Italian designer of this decade who was heavily influenced by the "beyond the real" art and incorporated it into her designs. You may also like vintage-is-so-beautiful
One of my favorite decades of the last century, we've now reached the 1920s, or as it's sometimes known, "the jazz age" or "the roaring '20's." World War I was over, empires destroyed, and with women finally getting the right to vote, the Victorian age was over. Feisty young females cut their hair, bound their breasts if they were large, inched up their skirts, and became flappers, doing such "deplorable" things as smoking, drinking and even swearing like men...if they were daring enough to risk getting caught at speakeasies that is, for this was also the era of prohibition, moonshine, and homemade hooch. Motion pictures picked up steam, and Louise Brooks and Clara Bow became "it girls." Music moved away from ragtime, barbershop, and dixieland (though that still remained popular in the south) to more big band, swing type jazz, and the ukulele gained popularity...as did phrases like "the cat's meow," and "the bee's knees." Then, of course, there was the Charleston... This was the time the mob began as well, and the brilliant new series Boardwalk Empire (as well as several films) captures this powerful but deadly phenomenon. I highly recommend seeing it if you're a fan of the mob, the '20's or both (especially since it just won many Emmys). Another good thing that came from this era though is radio...after its invention, brands and shows began popping up by the dozens nationwide...something I'm sure music lovers have been thankful for ever since! Dance 'Til Dawn Barbie 1920s Flapper Barbie Society Hound Barbie That's all for this week folks! As usual, any books from this period you want to share, please shoot 'em this-a-way please!
