Belgium, 1912  In 1911, Paul Poiret introduced his jupe-culotte or harem pant (literally translated as "panty skirt"), which were considered quite risqué for the time and enraged the public. Poiret may have been fashion's last great orientalist, and was accused of attacking the western way of life. In Vienna, the first woman to wear Jupe Culotte in public was mobbed and had to be whisked away in a car by the police.
