Woot woot!  I've quilted and bound 22 quilts since November 1.  That's 22 of my 30-quilt goal! Here is "A Wedding Quilt for Joseph and Annie."  It was designed by Malka Dubrowsky, and the pattern is available here.  She includes the Kona Cotton colors so you can make your quilt exactly as shown! I didn't remember that Malka also used straight-line quilting on her quilt.  I thought I was being so clever to quilt it that way! Lucky for me, Elder Son came down from Denver for an appointment this week.  He replaced the nylon tracks on Meggie so she doesn't do the "swoop" when I'm trying to quilt straight lines. Quilt #20/30 is a Strip Club quilt from early this year.  The fabric is Fig Tree & Co.'s "Strawberry Fields."  The pattern is called "Shortcakes."  Hence, "Strawberry Shortcakes!" Next is an oldie that was almost a tragedy.  This quilt was waiting to be bound, sitting on the wet bar in my downstairs sewing room.  The kitchen sink overflowed and soaked everything on the wet bar.  Of course, I didn't notice it right away, and the dark red sashing bled into the off-white sashing.  I didn't want to just trash this lovely quilt, so I serged all the edges, then washed it with some color-catcher sheets.  Success! The pattern is called "Four Patch Posies.  It's a kaleidoscope variation -- it is really fun to see how every block is different, even though they're all from the same fabric. I'm slowly but surely getting all my 30s reproduction fabrics pieced and quilted.  This one, "Bowties" was another "Block a Day" from Anna Lena:  My bookcase of ready-to-go quilts is filling up! I tend to create in muted colors, but every once in a while, I like to shout some bold bright color out into the world.  This is one of those quilts! I loved the Bora Bora fabric as soon as it came in & was thinking strictly about making bags with it.  But when I saw this stack & whack pattern, I new I had to use it. I paired the Bora Bora with Moda Bella in Christmas Red & Kona Solid in Kelly Green. The pattern is Four Patch Stacked Posies by H D Designs.  It was so fast to cut and stitch {and fun to pick each block’s design}. If you’ve never done a stack & whack before, this is a great one to start with.  It’s just a four patch.  You can make a four patch, right?  Stack and Whack is just what you do:  stack up (in this case) 4 exact copies of the fabric repeat-all face up, then WHACK it up (in this case into squares). My repeat was 23”.  I got 66 blocks from one set of 4 cuts of fabric.  I got a nice big quilt with about 3 yards of my focus fabric. I started working on a 4-Patch Stacked Posey quilt. Last weekend, I got the squares cut out. Here's a pic of the overall fabric and pattern for this quilt : I am easily amused : It never ceases to amaze me how these 4 squares come together in such different patterns, depending on the orientation of the blocks and what elements get highlighted or show-cased. Here are 4 layout options for the same block : Depending on what's in the middle, something else always stands out. Even the gray "empty" areas have interesting things happening in them with this fabric. I'm not even doing any sewing on these yet. It's so darn relaxing to come home after a long day at work using my brain for words and ideas--to come home and start working on something VISUAL like which layout option I like best. I start out with one orientation (this is a new sample square) : That looks pretty good ... But I have to see what the other options might be possible (What am I missing if I don't at least try?), so I turn each of the blocks 90 degrees to the right Layout#2 : This one is okay ... Let's see what else might be in store: Gotta try option #3 : Nah. I'm not crazy about this one. Option #4 : Wow! Never would I have expected that green wreath in the middle. And I like how the gray swirl moves the eye to the corners. I think this one wins! It's a whole different part of my brain that gets exercised when I step into my sewing room. The Kaleidescope and 4-patch posey quilts manage to keep my interest. I want to know what the next block will look like. The exciting thing for me is that every block is different, but still fits so well into the overall color scheme. When I'm doing a regular quilt with so many of the exact same blocks, I tend to get really bored with doing the same thing over and over again. Those projects get started and put away because I need a break from the monotony. I think that's why I sort of headed towards art quilts over traditional quilting. With upwards of 52 4-patch blocks, I'm keeping the chosen layouts separated with sheets of paper (you can sort of see the stacked sheets above)--until I can sit down at the machine and sew them. I don't want to have to shift gears and go into design mode when I'm ready to sew-sew-sew.
