Astronomers may have found an exomoon, and Hubble is going to check
Astronomers may have found an exomoon. In a paper posted online July 26 at arXiv.org, Teachey & Kipping present the first evidence for an exomoon candidate: Kepler 1625b i. The object, if it exists, orbits a planet slightly larger than Jupiter around a star about 4,000 light-years away. Because the potential moon is probably about the size of Neptune, the team nicknamed it “Neptmoon.” The team calculated that only 38% of Jupiter-like planets close to their stars are likely to host moons like Ju
Walter S. McAfee (September 2, 1914 - February 18, 1995) was an African American scientist and astronomer, notable for participating in the world's first first lunar radar echo experiments with Project Diana. McAfee was born in Ore City, Texas in Upshur County, as one of nine children. His parents grew up on a farm and his dad was a CME minister.
Chandra Finds Evidence for Violent Stellar Merger
Gamma-ray bursts, or GRBs, are some of the most violent and energetic events in the Universe. Although these events are the most luminous explosions in the universe, a new study using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, NASA’s Swift satellite and other telescopes suggests that scientists may be missing a majority of these powerful cosmic detonations.
