A collection of art and objects relevant to the 'Wildevrouw' project. 'Wildevrouw' is an upcoming novel by Jeroen Olyslaegers, set in 16th century Antwerp. The art works I'll be producing will be a set of three monumental tapestries (in collaboration with Textielmuseum Tilburg), and three digitally animated video-loops ('miniatures', or 'emblemata'). A Selection Of Weird & Disturbing Medieval Manuscript Art • Lazer Horse

In this article, we provide an odd collection of medieval art, taken from manuscripts of the time. Many of the images are "marginalia" — scribbles and doodles in the margins of documents. Although the words "medieval Europe" conjure up images of plague, witches and torture, it seems that medieval Europeans enjoyed a good laugh, too.

A Spy, a Map, and the Quest for Power in 16th-Century Europe

A Spy, a Map, and the Quest for Power in 16th-Century Europe

In 1502, as Europeans hungrily looked to the vast new continent across the Atlantic Ocean, innovative maps of these unfamiliar territories became objects of power and intrigue. Alberto Cantino, an Italian spy, acquired a Portuguese map showing stunning finds in the New World.

Designed by Bernard van Orley | The Last Supper | The Met

This splendid Last Supper is part of a series of four tapestries, designed about 1520, illustrating the Passion of Christ and possibly woven for the duke of Alba. Designed by Bernaert van Orley, who was court painter to Margaret of Austria, the scene is set in an elaborate Italian Renaissance loggia, through which other classically inspired building are visible in the background

Cutting the Stone, also called The Extraction of the Stone of Madness or The Cure of Folly, is a painting by Hieronymus Bosch, displayed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, completed around 1494 or later. It depicts the extraction, by a man wearing a funnel hat, of the stone of madness, a "keye" (modern Dutch: kei) from a patient's head, using trepanation, Bosch has exchanged the traditional "stone" as the object of extraction with the bulb of a flower.
