Detail of the Madeleine Vionnet evening gown. In 1918 Vionnet hired Marie-Louise Favot. As a dressmaker and trained artist, Favot designed all of Vionnet's embroidery motifs. Though the motifs were designed in-house, the actual work was contracted out to Michonet, a Parisian embroidery firm founded in 1858. Michonet was later bought by Albert Lesage.

Jours de France 1974: when I got of the plane in Paris in winter 1977, I tried to remember every detail to tell mom. Before the age of globalization--it was a magical time and so very different from the US. First of all the abundance of furs was staggering...everyone was wearing a fur collar or coat. Also, I went into Printemps and reveled in the tortoise shell combs and hair accessories.
