9/11, September 11, 2001, never forget, Twin Towers hit, World Trade Center, blue sky, smoke, fire, explosion, history, horror, photograph, photo
the photographer who took this picture: David Handschuh: "When only one plane had hit the World Trade Center, I was going to the site of an airplane crash and this horrible fire burning sixty, seventy floors up. There was no doubt in my mind that the firefighters, paramedics and police officers would put out the fire, rescue people, and everything would be okay. I was standing in front of the south tower when it got hit by the second plane and realized that what happened was very intentional, not accidental." I remember that moment of realization very well, too.
I will never forget. September 11, 2001 World Trade Center New York City
The famous Sardi's - 2nd trip to Sardi's: I collided with Carol Channing - she was gracious as ever. With Elsie, [Bobbie] and Carole on our way to Europe in our little black dresses ...we got the center round 1st floor table! Up all night dancing then walked barefoot to the hotel on upper East Side with kind police escort at 5am ...singing B'way tunes.

"Sardi's, Times Square" by New York Big Apple on Flickr - Sardi's (1921), 234 W. 44th St., Theatre District, New York. Vincent Sardi (1885-1969) opened his first restaurant at 246 W. 44th St. in 1921. When that building was demolished in 1926 for a new theatre, the Shuberts offered the restaurant space down the block at 234 W. 44th Street.

A fire hydrant in Harlem opened during the summer heat. New York, 1963 | photo by Leonard Freed. We always called them johnny pumps. Before sprinkler caps, the water came out full force and we'd scrape the ends of soda cans and use them to direct the force of the water. Yep, we were fearless back then.
How we all miss those summer days. So love the feeling here. Leonard Freed Harlem, New York 1963

NYC 1951 /// The Third Avenue elevated train was torn down in 1955, and while the streets that it ran along were suddenly flooded with light, the Manhattan landscape lost one of its most enduring features. The elevated trains were quickly forgotten, like the horse cars before them. (photo: Esther Bubley)
