How to Plant Garlic Buy garlic at your local grocery store. Separate into separate cloves & pick the biggest ones to plant. Plant the garlic “root” end down. Plant the cloves 4" apart & the pointed tips are covered by 1-2" of dirt. Once the scapes form during the summer, pinch them off so the plant’s energy can go towards forming the bulb, not the scape flower. By August, the plant leaves will start to dry out & turn brown. Once all the leaves & stems are brown, they’re ready to harvest.

Spray the plant with Epsom salts (1 teaspoon dissolved in a spray bottle of warm water (about 4 cups). That gives the pepper plant a boost of magnesium that is required at flowering time to produce fruit.
