Peter Lik is a genius - a master of capturing light - John & I had the priviledge (and I do mean priviledge) of walking through 2 of his galleries in Vegas - stunning is the best adjective I can think of.
Here is an example of stencilling where no paint is used. Rather, you stencil with varnish, and then stain. The stain doesn't 'take' to the place where the varnish is (so it comes out clear wood color). This is delicate and pretty.
