They were discovered in November 1961. It was possible to make casts of the group of three. The lowest of the three bodies remains where it was discovered. Archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli developed the use of plaster casts to recreate the forms of plants and human bodies. He realised that where a corpse had been buried in ash, it had rotted over time and a cavity remained. This process gave information about how people had died in the eruption, what they were doing in their final moments and what sort of clothing they wore.

She was chosen a year prior to her death, fed a ritualistic diet for an approximate twelve months to make her gain weight, then was drugged and left on the shrine at Volcano Llullaillaco, where she was left to die of exposure. For five hundred years, her body had been preserved at 82 ft. She is considered to be the best preserved Andean mummy ever uncovered.
