Teaching contractions- This is another great way to visually represent a difficult concept for ELLs and other struggling learners. I like the color coded accordion style flash cards. I would use the colors to show the patterns of contracted words. For example: having the same color for you'll, we'll and I'll so that the student can understand that will is 'll when contracted.

Shades of Feelings: Paint chip cards on a binder ring. Kids can help create these. The cards are filled with verbs or adjectives then used as a resource for writing. These would also be great to use for children who have trouble expressing their feelings. Instead of words, little pictograms could be drawn & the child can choose which color they are "feeling" like today, & how intensely.
