Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, The Virgin Crowned, 1859

The Virgin Crowned - Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres
The Virgin with the Crown (1859). Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (French, 1780-1867). Oil on panel. This work is a more Byzantine influenced tableau, seen in the bejeweled crown and symmetrical positioning, as well as by the black background from which she hauntingly emanates. The eyes gaze directly into the viewers', establishing a more immediate and empathetic connection. The expert fashioning of her hands, with their elongated line and archaic feel, endow the Madonna with a timeless grace.

St. Philomena, my Grandpa's favorite saint.
I am a Saint ... Yes ... Me! How do you define the word "saint." It seems that most of us have accepted a more "Catholic" definition of the word. Here's another way to look at it. I'm not debating whether or not Francis of Assisi and Mother Teresa deserve sainthood. I'm asserting that none of us do!
St. Philomena- Patroness and Protectress of the Living Rosary. The young virgin who was martyred at age 13, willingly traded her earthly life for heavenly salvation and continues her work today promoting the virtues of purity and sanctity among the world’s youth and bringing the faithful closer to our Blessed Mother and Jesus Christ.

St Philomena was the daughter of a king in Greece who had converted to Christianity. Emp. Diocletian fell in love with her & she refused to be his wife, he subjected her to a series of torments: scourging, 2 angels cured her; drowning with an anchor attached to her 2 angels cut the rope & raised her to the river bank; being shot with arrows, 1st occasion her wounds were healed; on the 2nd, the arrows turned aside & on the 3rd, they returned & killed 6 of the archers. The Emp. had her decapitated

Of course, this isn't an icon. It's just a painting, but I love this artists work. St. Olga of Kiev--avenged her husband's death in a major way... then became the first Russian ruler to convert to Christianity.

This website has some examples of nativity scenes throughout art history (up to the Baroque period). I'm having trouble finding stuff for after Baroque. But we could incorporate these somehow: hang them on the end of pews in chronological order or something?
