The 'Cologne' Earring ~ 11th century ~ one of the world's foremost examples of medieval goldsmithery | Found during an excavation in an 11th-century cesspit at the edge of the medieval Jewish quarter. This earring made of gold, is richly ornamented with gemstones, pearls and an antique cameo. The ornate design and the unusual details, which have not been found anywhere else to date, led experts to conclude it most probably originated among the high nobility or even in the imperial court.
