Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: As Retold by Mo Willems
Mo Willem, Books Worth Reading, Kids Books, Fairytale, Children S Book, Picture Book
I love the humour that author Mo Willems brings to kids books. Goldilocks And The Three Dinosaurs is a very funny retelling of the classic tale. A great read aloud book with humour both kids and adults will delight in.
A spoof on the fairytale classic, Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs was written by Mo Willems and inspired by his young daughter, Trixie.
“Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs,” by Mo Willems H-great fractured fairy tale. Very sarcastic. Made me laugh out loud

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: As Retold by Mo Willems. A classic fairytale is reimagined through the eyes of comic genius and picture-book phenomenon Willems.
Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs is just delightful. Mo Willems is the best picture book author around!
Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: As Retold by Mo Willems and illustrated by Mo Willems Balzer & Bray, 2012. A very funny fractured fairy tale take on Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this picture book works on several levels, subverting well-worn genre conventions while creating fresh, funny characters. Deceptively simple mixed media pencil and digital illustrations let the story and characters shine through. Works as a read-aloud or one-on-one. (Preschool – Grade 2)
Reading Mo Willem's latest picture book, I had flashbacks to when I was a kid watching the hilarious Fractured Fairytales from the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. A vivid memory is my father laughing even harder than me or my sisters. Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs will likewise appeal to grown-ups as much as their offspring, which is a good thing as parents will probably be reading it aloud a lot. Willems tweaks the familiar storyline so that Goldilocks is the victim and not the callous housebreaker of the Grimm version. The dinosaurs lure "a poorly supervised little girl named Goldilocks" to their home by preparing chocolate pudding and leaving the front door unlocked. What will keep kids chuckling is that the dinosaurs' nefarious plans are never directly stated. In fact, Willems goes out of this way to assure young readers that the dinosaurs "were definitely not hiding in the woods waiting for an unsuspecting kid to come by." The heavy-handed irony is consistent throughout the book and provides much of the humor. The more Willems insists the dinosaurs mean no harm, the more obvious it becomes that they do. The illustrations give some of the best laughs. There's the door mat with the words "Tee-Hee" in parentheses under "Welcome" that Goldilocks blithely skips over. Or the telephone with an extremely long receiver designed to fit the dinosaurs' huge heads. Even the endpapers continue the fun. Willems has filled them with alternative ideas for titles, such as "Goldilocks and the Three Prairie Dogs," "Goldilocks and the Three Naked Mole Rats," or my favorite, "Goldilocks and the Three Wall Street Types." Now there's a scary fairy tale! Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems Balzer + Bray, 40 pages Published: September 2012
I was talking with our school librarian the other day to find out her current favorites in children’s books. She was very enthusiastic about a new book purchased by our parents’ club, Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems. I can see why. It’s hilarious! She generously loaned me the book and I had a great time reading it to my students. The kids enjoyed it too. The story begins, “Once upon a time, there were three Dinosaurs: Papa Dinosaur, Mama Dinosaur, and some other Dinosaur who happened to be visiting from Norway. One day for no particular reason, the three Dinosaurs made up their beds, positioned their chairs just so and cooked three bowls of delicious chocolate pudding at varying temperatures.” The three Dinosaurs decided to take a walk and when Mama Dinosaur laughed, “Hey hey, hey . . .” and said, “I sure hope no innocent little succulent child happens by our unlocked home . . .” we stopped right there and had a mini vocabulary lesson. After they understood the word “succulent” we moved on to inferences, such as, what did Mama Dinosaur really mean when she said she hoped a child wouldn’t happen by? A couple of pages later when the narrator said the dinosaurs “were definitely not hiding in the woods waiting for an unsuspecting kid to come by.” The second-graders laughed. They weren’t surprised to turn the page and see dinosaurs peeking around trees in the forest. My students enjoyed retelling this tale so it was easy to work on the second Common Core Reading Standard for Literature where students are expected to “Retell stories, including key details . . .” And it was especially fun to work on the ninth Reading Standard for Literature where the second graders are asked to, “Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g. Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.” They had a great time comparing this story to the more traditional one. When discussing this tale, one of my second graders thought there were lessons to be learned other than those covered by the standards. Noah thinks if you are going for a walk in the woods “you might want to listen for really strange noises and if you hear something that sounds like an evil laugh – go away!” That sounds like good advice to me. I asked my students if they had any other advice for readers of this blog and they all agreed, “If you haven’t read this book, you should.” I couldn’t agree more.

This book makes such a fun read-aloud, with lots of repetition and humor. Children will love predicting what will happen, using their own schema about seasons, weather and animals to base their predictions. Also useful for legend studies (why rabbits have short tails, why we have pussywillows). Cover implies a winter read, but I like this one at the end of summer as we start to contemplate appreciating the attributes of the season we're in.

How do airplanes, trucks, boats, and other big rigs work? The ingenious Christoph Niemann has the surprising (and funny!) answers in this preschool picture book about transportation (and imagination)!
That's How! invites readers to use their imaginations as they follow two children as they make up their own explanations about how things work. From an airplane that appears to be held together entirely by chickens, to a steamroller that operates from a bird tickling two bears, this book is sure to bring about much laughter and speculation from young picture book readers.

In this graphically stunning picture book, Blexbolex explores the cyclical nature of time by looking at the seasons. In this graphically stunning picture book, Blexbolex explores the cyclical nature of time by looking at the seasons. Using objects, landscapes, activities, and different types of people that are associated with each season (such as a skier, a swimmer, a roasted chestnut seller), Blexbolex evokes the sense of permanency given to life by its cyclical nature, despite the fact that time is always passing.

7 Nonfiction Children’s Books Blending Whimsy and Education
Seasons by Blexbolex 2010 | 180 pages | Picture Book Created by Blexbolex, a French comics artist, Seasons is a picture book containing a series of colorful, retro-style prints depicting a vast variety of concepts. Each picture is labeled in block letters with what it portrays: DISASTER, SUNBURN, DEBRIS, COCOON, FLOOD. I was drawn to the book at first because the New York Times included it on its list of Best illustrated Children's Books of 2010, along with some other books I loved, like Busing Brewster, and Henry In Love. I loved the image the article featured, entitled "Traffic Jam," which depicted a series of cars traveling bumper to bumper down a winding road. But it wasn't until I had the book in hand that I began to fully realize what it is. I expected a series of connected illustrations, and a story arc to tie them all together. This is not that. Some of the illustrations are connected to one another. Each of them hints at a particular season of the year, which is what ties the book together, but there is no definitive beginning, middle, or end. It's just a book, filled with cool pictures of various concepts. And that's not a criticism. As skeptical as I was of the need for a book like this, and as puzzled as I was about who the intended audience was, this book is really cool, and somehow, though I'm still not entirely sure why, it invoked a really strong sense of nostalgia in me. The images reminded me of being in kindergarten, when everything in the classroom is labeled, so kids can see the words associated with everyday objects. I could easily picture Blexbolex's work hanging above a classroom blackboard, or in a school hallway. But it's also not just a simple children's book. Many of the concepts portrayed in this book are deeper than mere vocabulary, and I found myself poring over particular pages, just admiring the way this artist puts shapes and colors together. The raindrops bouncing off a makeshift newspaper hat on the page marked DOWNPOUR, the recurrence of a red house in various weather conditions and states of peril, and the angry red streaks of SUNBURN are just a handful of the many interesting and pleasing visuals this book offers. Seasons is not something you can read in the traditional sense, but it is definitely a book that can truly appeal to all ages. I recommend taking a look at it; it's something different, and in this case, different is good. I borrowed Seasons from my local public library.

I keep track of new kids books I want to read and review over here. It beats the hell out of a virtually overflowing Amazon cart. About a month ago, I brought home a brand new picture book from my list, which my 5-year-old son made me read no less than 723 times. This means he really liked it. So, I checked out two other related titles, and then we read them an additional hundred thousand evenings. And, guess what? I still really like those three books! The fact that I don't want to lock myself in a closet at reading time each night means that these books are pretty much completely awesome. Keith Baker, a former elementary school teacher and picture book author/illustrator, published a very original alphabet book titled LMNO Peas, to rave reviews four years ago. It not only received several starred journal reviews, it was named a best book of 2010 by multiple list makers. Because that book was so successful, 1-2-3 Peas was published in 2012. That book got even more starred reviews. Now it's 2014, and Baker just released Little Green Peas: A Big Book of Colors. And you'll never guess ... but, this one is garnering superb accolades, too. It's hard for me to pinpoint why these books, which are in essence basic concept titles for kids two to six, are so unique and appealing. We all know there are hundreds of alphabet, counting, and color-teaching books out there. I think it really boils down to one thing: Peas, those vegetables that many preschoolers refuse to put anywhere near their mouths, are actually very, very cute. Especially when anthropomorphized in miniature, with endearing little stick arms and legs, and energy reminiscent of ... well ... little kids, to be exact. Combine that with a Where's Waldo-throw back seek-and-find factor, (peas are tiny, so lots of fun can be had spending time figuring out what each one is up to), and some funny, punny, well-written rhymes, and you have a picture book that goes beyond your typical concept-teaching title. In Keith Baker's hands, peas are whimsical, peas are busy, and peas are simply a very good time. I prefer the hardcover versions of the three pea books (I like larger artwork when I'm exploring detailed drawings), but note that they are available in board book format in case you want to share these on the go or with little people with messy hands. I honestly can't recommend Baker's LMNO Peas, 1-2-3 Peas, and Little Green Peas enough. I hope you'll try them out with your favorite young reader soon. Meanwhile, I'm waiting eagerly for another installment in 2016 ... maybe a concept book about pea opposites or pea feelings is just around the corner? I very much hope so. Peas out. 1-2-3- Peas LMNO Peas Little Green Peas: A Big Book of Colors

Chalk was a big favorite to get a Caldecott nod, and now, having read it, I can see why this was such a popular opinion. This book is delightful. If I was doing a mock Caldecott at an elementary school again this spring, this book would absolutely be in my lineup. I love a wordless picture book. I remember that my mom didn't ever care for them because then you have to make up the story as you go along, but as a mega-reader, I like wordless books because it makes it easier for me to focus on the illustrations instead of just zipping through the words. The story follows three children walking to the park on a very rainy day. Hanging from the mouth of one of the ride-on dinosaurs is a bag of chalk. One of the little girls pulls out a piece of chalk and draws a sun on the rainy ground. And then the real sun comes out and in an instant the rain is gone. Of course, now they all have to draw something and see if it comes to life. Which is all well and good, until you draw something scary. . . I love how realistic these images are; they make the magic even more striking. The colors are so rich, and this image, where the chalk butterflies turn into real butterflies is breathtaking. I think this book, with a box of sidewalk chalk, would be the perfect birthday present for a child. Or for me.

The whole story is told in just one sentence per page. And readers are invited to join along in the huffing and puffing. This one would be great to use with older kids to talk about summarizing/synthesizing etc.
"This interactive retelling of the Three Little Pigs story allows the reader to play the part of the big bad wolf. Three interior die-cut holes invite readers to huff, puff, and blow the pigs' houses down! This fractured fairy tale ends sweetly when, rather than blowing down the third pig's brick home, the wolf/reader blows out the candles on a cake baked by the pigs! Brigg lives in a small, grey room in a large, grey city. When he finds a book in the library labelled 'Do Not Read', he cannot resist borrowing it. In it, he comes upon pictures of bright, vibrant objects called flowers. A deceptively simple and haunting story, beautifully and mysteriously illustrated, set in a bleak future metropolis.
Banned Books Week THE FLOWER by John Light, illustrated by Lisa Evans. Brigg lives in a small, grey room in a large, grey city. When he finds a book in the library labelled ‘Do Not Read’, he cannot resist. He discovers pictures of bright, vibrant objects called 'flowers'. He cannot find any in the city but stumbles on a packet of seeds. Unexpected results grow and bloom even after we turn the last page. Enigmatic story told with simplicity, but resonates long after we finish.
