TEKS: 2.10B Audience: 2nd grade Behavior: sort and organize data to create a bar graph. Condition: The students will place their sponge over their favorite animal. The students will have a piece of paper that they will draw their own bar graph of the data. Plan on using: To give the students a 3D model of a bar graph so they realize that each sponge represents one (in this case), and bar graphs are a way to organize and count categories. I will use this as a whole group instruction activity.

Friends~Do you teach graphing in class? Like a whole unit? We sure do and my kiddos are rocking the concept! We have been graphing from day one with our weather graph but our math unit is taking it to a new level with pictographs and line plots. One of the best ways I have found to drive this skill home is with large floor graphs. They are really simple to make. I just add a sentence strip for the title and index cards for the topics. The students can use post its or index cards to add their data. If you are interested in my graphing unit you can click below to check it out! I have found that giving them the opportunity to survey the class and collect the data with a fun topic like favorite foods or sweets helps them get into the lesson. We started with eye color and it was so fun to watch how polite the students were when they asked each other during our survey. Here are two great videos I will be using with my students next week. I really liked how this teacher used cleaning sponges to visually represent data collected. (Couldn't find a source so if it is you please let me know so that I can give you credit!) Check out these awesome posters from Amy Alvis! I grabbed them on Teachers Pay Teachers. They are going to be perfect in my math center! Or grab these FREE posters from Primary Punch! Grab this freebie I made to go with the graphs above:) I plan on posting the graphs all over the classroom and having my students hunt for the specific graph. Then fill in the missing information on this 2 page freebie. Grab it over on my Facebook Page under the Facebook Freebie tab! This week for homework my kiddos are doing a survey by asking: What is your favorite sweet? They will also represent their data in a bar graph. I was cracking up because during our morning meeting the students were telling me all about how they found 10 people to ask. Some called their family or used Face Time. Another took their survey to a basketball game. On my way out yesterday, several student bombarded me from our after school care and asked me to participate in their survey. Check it out below! Mine is the chocolate covered strawberry! What is your favorite sweet treat?

Growing Kinders: apples
I LOVE fall. We are having an exceptionally warm fall this year, and I am LOVING it! The trees are slowly changing to beautiful shades of orange, yellow, and red. The mums are blooming beautifully, and the nights are cool and crisp. When I taught Kindergarten, I always loved kicking off the year with an apple study. Our science curriculum in first grade is a bit more heavy, so I’m not able to do as much as I like. We focus heavily on the life cycles of insects through inquiry, but I still love to review the life cycles of pumpkins and apples with the kiddos. Here are some of my favorite books to read during our apple unit: I loved making this class art activity after we read The Season’s of Arnold’s Apple Tree. Kim Adsit shared this activity during on of her sessions and I do it in one way or another every year. Here are a couple of charts that we did when learning about the life cycle and parts of an apple: The pictures are on velcro, so the kids can mix them up and sequence them in the correct order. Again, the parts are on velcro! I also loved to fill my center drawers with fun apple themed centers! Here are some of my favorites: Most of these apple activities can be found in these two packs. I’ve put them on sale for today only (Sunday, 9/27) if you’re interested! On Friday, we also did a fun directed drawing of Johnny Appleseed! The children are not quite finished with these, but when they are I will snap a picture! I followed the directions from this amazing pack: What are your favorite apple activities? I would love to hear – leave a comment below!

OK, not really a room idea... but I love things that You can inside a room, to make it better for the kids. This is one fun way to introduce maths & graphs to a small child. Brilliant!
Great graphing idea for learners who need to actually manipulate the graph for how many more, how many less, how many together...etc. (dead pin)
Math Data & Interactive Math Manipulatives: Students can learn about graphing while using fun Lego pieces to gather information about favorite fruits! A survey can be taken as a class to see what fruits are most popular, and then make a graph out of the Legos.

Matching Popsicle, Color Popsicle, Teaching Color, Activities For Toddlers, Popsicle Color, Learning Color
Busy Bag: match the word on the popsicle stick, with the color of the popsicle top (make with felt instead of paper) The second level was the words written in black, so there are no clues to what color it is (other than the word itself)The third level is to write a flavor and have the children match the flavor to what color that should be.
Colorful Popsicle Matching Game Use felt or foam to create colorful popsicle pockets. Write colors on popsicle sticks.
Busy Bag Activities For Toddlers: Would be great for Jamie, Jacob already knows his colors.
