Rasputin was a Siberian peasant-turned-mystic. He walked clear across Europe on a spiritual journey. Returning to Russia, he joined a Christian sect that encouraged sinning as much as possible so that one could be forgiven as much as possible. According to such logic, Rasputin participated in frequent orgies. He soon came to favor in the court of Tsar Nicholas II.
