Next book club book!
A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife captures a remarkable period of time—Paris in the twenties—and an extraordinary love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley. In Chicago in 1920, Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway and finds herself captivated by his good looks, intensity, and passionate desire to write. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group of expatriates that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. But the hard-drinking and fast-living café life does not celebrate traditional notions of family and monogamy. As Hadley struggles with jealousy and self-doubt and Ernest wrestles with his burgeoning writing career, they must confront a deception that could prove the undoing of one of the great romances in literary history.
The story of the love that ended an empire. In this commanding book, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Robert K. Massie sweeps readers back to the extraordinary world of Imperial Russia to tell the story of the Romanovs’ lives: Nicholas’s political naïveté, Alexandra’s obsession with the corrupt mystic Rasputin, and little Alexis’s brave struggle with hemophilia.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books. If you are as much of a hopeless romantic as I am, you will love curling up with this book and reading it over and over again. really good! what if we really did give 1,000 white women to the cheyenne indians to try to assimilate them into our culture? this is the fictional story of the lies told to native americans and the women who chose to take this adventure to earn their freedom.
One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. - with so many re-pins elsewhere I thought I'd add it to my "should read" list.
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus - historical fiction, the account of several "civilized" woman married to Cheyenne Indians (Chief Little Wolf) as part of a government program (General Grant) in the mid-800s in Nebraska territory. interesting, quick read - believable, draws you in, you won't want to put it down.
Historical fiction about a woman who chooses to live with the Native Americans (1875) in order to find her personal freedom.
April - One Thousand White Women- 3/12 - OK I found this very interesting and enjoyed it until the last chapter. That is 2 book club books in a row that were downers at the end :
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus.. *** 3 Stars. Set shortly after the Civil War, this is a story about white women being 'traded' to the Cherokee Tribe via the "Brides for Indians" program. Very interesting at times, yet drug on at others. Definitely not a favorite book of mine, but it was ok. (note- the Brides for Indians was actually a proposal, but it never happened, the book is fiction)
Historical fiction - if you like Native American history, you'll probably like this.
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd This book is fiction, but it might not have been. The book starts in 1875 with Ulysses S. Grant requesting that 1,000 white women intermarry with Cheyenne Indians. The story is that of one woman, May Dodd, who volunteered to do just that. This is her story and the story of those she met along her journey. The books was, in fact, so realistic that I had to check it really was fiction. There is a lot of information about the lifestyle of the Indians and the attitudes of the time. And in our book club led to some "what if" discussions, which were also very enlightening. The book is really well written and very informative about the period, the politics and human nature. This is a favorite of mine amongst the book club books I have read. Pin It
