How did a 3rd C. Lycian Bishop from ancient Turkey became Santa Claus? Bishop Nicholas 3rd C. of the Hellenistic Lycian city of Myra (Demre Turkey) was known for leaving gifts for the needy, like gold coins in shoes. In 1087 Italian sailors took his bones with them to Italy when Seljuk Turks invaded. Shown here in a church in Bari Italy. Turkey naturally wants them returned. Muslims do not venerate him as a saint but he is highly regarded.
