Salute is a fantastic card game to encourage speed and automaticity with basic math facts. This game works with addition/subtraction or multiplication/division. Click to get free printable game instructions. This game would help the students practice their math facts enough that then they then would have automaticity with them. This means that they'd be able to understand and answer the math facts without having to think too much about it (p. 229).

Love this math idea
Here I am!!!! Wow, the last few days have been crazzzzzzy around here. As I mentioned in my last post, I was asked to change from 5th grade Science to 5th grade Math and I have since been scurrying around trying to get my "stuff" together. First of all, I want to begin by saying I am LOVING teaching Math. It is like being reunited with an old friend......teacher friends that have walked into my class even notice the difference in my attitude and enthusiasm. Mental note, if you are feeling tired and weary.............change subjects or grades........mix it up a little, it will make a difference. I have accumulated (on Pinterest) a few Math foldables and ideas that I want to incorporate into my Math journals. I linked every pin to the original author or blog. So without further adieu: This is a great idea that allows the student to create a spinner in their journal. They can use this spinner for probability, fractions and possibly games. Time I love this method of teaching elapsed time. We were working on this today. Measurement Jenn at Beyond the Grades This is a simplified version of gallon man. We cover these types of skills questions all year through the daily use of Simple Solutions Math, if you have never heard of it you might want to check it out here. It is a wonderful workbook that reviews various skills that they have learned up to ( in our case) the 5th grade. They also have a version for Science and English. Love, love, love this resource. Mean, Median Mode and Range Sherrie at Middle School Math Rules Angle Measurement Order of Operations Please, Excuse, My Dear, Aunt Sally I love how this shows multiplication and division on the same step as well as addition and subtraction. These steps are often taught incorrectly. :( Be sure to follow these links to the original blog. There are many, many more journaling ideas. Blog On!

Math Stations Differentiated Math Lessons...I am so passionate about Reading and Writing Workshops because I can provide my students with the differentiated instruction that is so important in elementary school. Graphing Lessons, The Schroeder Page We graphed out eye color!
Friends~Do you teach graphing in class? Like a whole unit? We sure do and my kiddos are rocking the concept! We have been graphing from day one with our weather graph but our math unit is taking it to a new level with pictographs and line plots. One of the best ways I have found to drive this skill home is with large floor graphs. They are really simple to make. I just add a sentence strip for the title and index cards for the topics. The students can use post its or index cards to add their data. If you are interested in my graphing unit you can click below to check it out! I have found that giving them the opportunity to survey the class and collect the data with a fun topic like favorite foods or sweets helps them get into the lesson. We started with eye color and it was so fun to watch how polite the students were when they asked each other during our survey. Here are two great videos I will be using with my students next week. I really liked how this teacher used cleaning sponges to visually represent data collected. (Couldn't find a source so if it is you please let me know so that I can give you credit!) Check out these awesome posters from Amy Alvis! I grabbed them on Teachers Pay Teachers. They are going to be perfect in my math center! Or grab these FREE posters from Primary Punch! Grab this freebie I made to go with the graphs above:) I plan on posting the graphs all over the classroom and having my students hunt for the specific graph. Then fill in the missing information on this 2 page freebie. Grab it over on my Facebook Page under the Facebook Freebie tab! This week for homework my kiddos are doing a survey by asking: What is your favorite sweet? They will also represent their data in a bar graph. I was cracking up because during our morning meeting the students were telling me all about how they found 10 people to ask. Some called their family or used Face Time. Another took their survey to a basketball game. On my way out yesterday, several student bombarded me from our after school care and asked me to participate in their survey. Check it out below! Mine is the chocolate covered strawberry! What is your favorite sweet treat?

FlapJack Educational Resources: Comparing Fractions with Play Doh
Comparing Fractions with Play Doh
Howdy! We're still working on fractions, and I saw this cute idea on Pinterest to represent fractions with PlayDoh. I can't find the link that inspired me, but here is my take on it. What We Used: * Each student shared a container of PlayDoh with their wholegroup partner. * Individual white boards and Expos * Protractors (our pizza cutters) * Camera Projector What We Did: In fourth grade we have several reglas (rules) when it comes to comparing and ordering fractions, so we went over three of them while "making pizza." Rule #1: When the denominators are equal, the fraction with the largest numerator will be the largest fraction. First, we wrote the fractions 1/4 and 3/4. (I stuck with denominators 4 and 8 to keep the dividing into equal parts easy.) Then we made our pizzas and divided them by looking at the denominators. I then chose two students. One was going to eat 1/4 of a pizza, and the other was going to eat 3/4. I had each partner group discuss who was going to eat the most pizza and why. Rule #2: When the numerators are the same, the fraction with the smallest denominator will be the largest fraction. Rule #3: If the numerator is one less than the denominator in both fractions, the fraction with the larger numbers will be the largest fraction. Using the camera projector really helped to guide the lesson. I have a whiteboard actually taped under the camera that I use ALL the time. The students had a lot of fun and were very responsible with the PlayDoh. I guess PlayDoh is not just for kindergarten! And it's so much neater afterwards with 4th graders! Hope you're having a great week! Tabitha Carro
