I needed a time number line to help my third graders with elapsed time problems. I couldn't find one that was just right, so I created this one. There are four strips on one page, that when attached form a complete 24 hour number line. The top counts by 15 minute intervals, and the bottom is numbered by tens, but the 5 minute increments are marked on the number line.

Can you believe we are already half way through May? Time'satickin'! We only have 15 more days of school left. But, SHHHH! Don't tell my kiddos!! Even though summer vacation is just around the corner, we're still in full on learning mode in the Applicious classroom. For the past few weeks, we've been working on linear measurement To help practice using inches and centimeters, I set up measurement stations around the classroom. Working in groups of two or three, the kiddos worked through each station using the inch side of our rulers. Before letting the students on the loose, I discussed how to approximate the length of an object to the rounding to the nearest inch. Later in the week, we became scientists and practiced measuring items in centimeters using the same stations. Once we had a grasp on using tools to measure, I had the kiddos make this tab book to show their understanding of estimating length and applying it to real world items. On the inside they had to write and draw three things that would be about the size of the measurement written. Such an easy thing to grade as well! This can be tricky, especially if students do not have a physical object to equate their measurement unit too. So as a class, we worked to come up with real life equivalents for each unit of measurement. inch: about a paperclip centimeter: a pinky fingernail foot: inside of your lower arm yard: length of your outstretched arms meter: 100 pinky finger nails or outstretched arms. (In a perfect world, I would have an anchor chart to hang in my room for the kiddos to reference, but unfortunately, that just wasn't in the cards at this time of year... #busyteacherproblems) We also worked on measuring larger items using the meter and yard stick. The kiddos LOVED estimating and measuring how long our classroom was in both feet and yards. As a perfect end cap to our unit, we made these fun measurement monsters. Each kiddo chose their choice of colored paper. I provided the eyes, legs, and mouths and had them make a monster. Then, they measured the various body parts. In years past I gave the students the body shapes, but I love how they turned out allowing them to make up the body. Here's a few of my favorites. THAT Bow?!?! Adorbs! Alligator jaws! You can grab all these activities and a few more in my newly update Monster Mash Measurement Pack. In addition to all this measurement fun, I've been conducting of my end of year parent conferences. SOOOOOOO glad to have these forms and my EC planner to keep all those meetings straight! I always forget how busy this time of year really is. Now I am off to enjoy this BEAUTIFUL weekend! God has blessed us with 0% humidity and temps of low 80's. You don't look this gift horse in the mouth. ;)

I'm spending the beginning of the summer becoming more and more familiar with the CCSS for Math. Fourth grade has a LOT of fractions, so I'm looking at what kinds of manipulatives we want need for the fall. We don't have much, and we have $$ to spend for next year. Any suggestions? I especially like shopping through EAI Education and have already found a lot that our fourth grade team can use. While I was thinking about it, I thought I'd take the time to go through an activity from this past year that I really liked (and I think the kids "got it", which is always exciting). We worked hard on fractions and decimals specifically how they are related and not just random math concepts we have to learn. I had them do this activity I gave them one hundreds chart and told them to create an artistic design. The next day, I handed out another hundreds chart where we put the colors together (closer to base10 style). When they were finished, we figured out the fraction and decimal for each color and made a chart. We talked about how even though both hundreds chart design looks different, there is still an equal amount of each color. **This activity was easily differentiated based on how many colors I allowed students to use. Some students were able to handle many colors/numbers, but some were still trying to grasp the concept and only used a few colors** After our chart and "artwork" was finished, I had them practice adding fractions and decimals using equations and variables. For instance, g + r = ? (green + red = ?). They would look at their chart and write the corresponding fraction or decimal for each variable/color. They did GREAT! I was so impressed with how well they were able to handle it. We loved this activity SO MUCH that I went ahead and made it into a center. I made 24 hundreds grids plus worksheet pages for the fraction/decimal amount AND the variable equations to solve for each one. Sometimes we do this center on the Mimio and/or SMARTBoard {above}, and sometimes we do it on paper {below}...and sometimes on both. Either way, my students asked for this activity EVERY DAY. You can find this activity, the BuildYourOwn Interactive Board, or the BUNDLE of both in the RTL Store! For the colored hundreds charts ONLY, you can find them {here}. Let me know how you use them I would love to hear more ideas! Follow RTL On

2D & 3D shapes!! Too cute!!
We've been working with shapes in math and focusing on writing dialogue and using quotation marks. Have you ever noticed that when you start teaching about these that suddenly, "every" "single" "word" "gets" "them"? Ha! As we practiced identifying shapes and their attributes, here's how we tied in our writing and practiced the correct use of quotation marks! Using the popular What Does the Fox Say? song I made a What Does the SHAPE Say? chart. I gave each group a speech bubble with dialogue that described the attributes of a shape. Students worked together to match the dialogue to the shape. Next, we did a variation of "I Have, Who Has." I passed out cards with the name of each shape and students took turns reading the clues in the speech bubbles. Whoever had the name of the shape glued it with repositionable glue sticks to the chart to label the shape. We practiced further in our attribute books. Students used quotation marks and wrote from the shape's point of view to describe the shape without using the word SAID! For some Friday afternoon math fun we made these shape fox crafts. Visit this post to see more seriously fun ways to teach shapes, grab a freebie while you're there, and see how we animated our shape fox crafts and turned it into our very own class movie! Find the resource I used for the chart parts, attributes booklets, and shape fox writing craft in What Does the SHAPE Say? here. We've also been classifying shapes by their attributes and working with quadrilaterals. For more practice with quotation marks we made quadrilateral characters and students wrote quadrilateral quotes! Well, that's it for me! I'm off for date night and my favorite fish tacos!
