A delightful hybrid of romantic comedy and gothic suspense, Nocturne for a Widow stars actress Sybil Ingram, first glimpsed in With This Curse. Sybil reluctantly retires from the theater to marry an American hotel magnate, but when he inconsiderately dies on their wedding night, she finds herself nearly penniless. She embarks for the Hudson Valley to stake a claim on ill-omened Brooke House... but dangerous rogue Roderick Brooke and mysterious social maven Mrs. Dove are determined to stop her.

This dress (circa 1866-1868) is a bit early for Sybil, but the bold color is exactly the shade of magenta of her favorite dress. I'd love to see the evening bodice that is part of the ensemble. Shown here is the high-necked bodice for formal daytime wear. It also has lower-cut evening bodice. (Philadelphia Museum of Art)

When Sybil gets to wear fetching little hats instead of dreary mourning bonnets, this look would suit her nicely.

A circa-1875 mourning dress. I love the panache of the asymmetrical drape of the overskirt. I can see Sybil snazzing up her mourning wardrobe with touches like that.

In her tartan dress made by Clara Graves, Sybil might look very like the lady on the right.
