I love this! It reminds me of Gaspar David Friedrich--and Hamlet.

The haunting new cover for Sea of Secrets is by the talented James T. Egan of Bookfly Design. I love the air of mystery--and the way Oriel's hair is blowing in the breeze coming off the sea.

Winterhalter's 1855 painting of Empress Eugenie and her ladies in waiting. The fashions and hairstyles on display at the Ellsmere Christmas ball would have been similarly gorgeous.

I didn't have any particular actress in mind when I created Oriel, but Samantha Morton in the 1997 adaptation of Jane Eyre has some of Oriel's qualities.

Geoff Smith and Nicola Walker Smith's cover of the always-mesmerizing "Song to the Siren" is so haunting. When I was writing Sea of Secrets, I was particularly drawn to rippling piano music, which seemed to capture the motion of waves. Philip Glass's remarkable soundtrack for The Hours suits Sea of Secrets so beautifully, it's as if he had been composing for Oriel's story without even knowing it. Haunting and atmospheric.
the quote you are no plainer than you believe yourself to be that is the real secret
“You are no plainer than you believe yourself to be," the duchess tells Oriel. "That is the real secret of beauty.”

"I felt as if my small frame encompassed emotions as turbulent and powerful as the ocean itself, too big to be contained." --Oriel, Sea of Secrets, chapter 7.

The Ellsworth family motto is Esse Quam Videri: "To be, rather than to seem."
This gown is very much the duchess's style: dainty, feminine--even frilly--and obviously extravagant! The ornamentation on this is breathtaking. The Dress, Haute Couture, Couture, Antique Dress, Historical Dresses, Victorian Dress, Victorian Clothing, Civil War Dress, 19th Century Fashion

This evening gown from 1856 is very close to how I envision Oriel's evening dress, although the color of this one is a little softer. I love how the plain design lets the luster of the fabric take center stage. Old Dresses, 1800s Fashion, Vintage Gowns

Charlotte Martin-On your shore
Charlotte Martin's haunting song "On Your Shore" evokes for me the darker side of Oriel and Herron's romance. "At the turn of the tide / I feel this part of me die / Am I washed on your shore and barely alive?"
