The coolest animal in the world: glaucus atlanticus, the pelagic blue sea slug.
The blue dragon mollusk. #bluedragon
Glaucus atlanticus (commonly known as the sea swallow, blue angel, blue glaucus, blue dragon, blue sea slug and blue ocean slug) is a species of small-sized blue sea slug, a pelagic aeolid nudibranch, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Glaucidae. These sea slugs feed on other pelagic creatures including the venomous cnidarian, the Portuguese Man o' War.
Weirdest sea creature and very pretty too... (commonly known as the Blue Sea Slug or Ses Lizard)

Star Formation in the Rosette Nebula This image of NGC 2244 from the Herschel Space Observatory shows newly-formed stars shrouded in clouds of dust and gas. While the red regions on the left are baby stars similar to our own Sun, the bright blue splotches will form stars ten times more massive. An absolutely stunning, mesmerizing image of the #stellar nursery in the #Rosette #Nebula, as captured by the European Space Agency's #Herschel #Space Observatory. One of the most fascinating images of our cosmos, one can find the likenesses of knights and dragons, running horses, tongue-lolling dogs, and much more, painted in vibrant hues of reds, yellows, and blues.
The Veil Nebula itself is a large supernova remnant, the expanding debris cloud from the death explosion of a massive star. While the Veil is roughly circular in shape covering nearly 3 degrees on the sky in the constellation Cygnus, this portion of the eastern Veil spans only 1/2 degree, about the apparent size of the Moon. That translates to 12 light-years at the Veil's estimated distance of 1,400 light-years from planet Earth.

NGC 2818 It may look like a seahorse, but the dark object is actually a pillar of smoky dust about 20 light-years long. The structure occurs in our neighbouring Large Magellanic Cloud, in a star-forming region near the Tarantula Nebula.. #space, #planets, #stars, #galaxies

Interstellar science: what would really happen if your planet orbited a black hole
NASAS Chandra Finds Fastest Wind From Stellar-Mass Black Hole. This artists impression shows a binary system containing a stellar-mass black hole called IGR J17091-3624, or IGR J17091 for short. The strong gravity of the black hole, on the left, is pulling gas away from a companion star on the right. This gas forms a disk of hot gas around the black hole, and the wind is driven off this disk. (Chandra X-ray Observatory)

This beauty is a polychaete worm. It belongs to a class of annelids that have been on this planet for about 530 million years (over 200 million years longer than trees). There are over 10,000 species of polychaetes and can live in some of the most extreme environments on Earth, from the coldest parts of the ocean to the hottest, right near hydrothermal vents.

Aaaaaaahhhh! Run away! Good thing these are too small to photographer with a normal camera.... Real-live sea monsters.

[O]bservations made by Hubble have revealed a planet just forty light years away that bucks established norms like a surly but otherwise virtuous character in... well, more than one Kevin Costner film, really... but especially in Waterworld. Which is fitting. Because scientists say the extrasolar planet — dubbed "GJ1214b — represents a brand new classification of planet: a veritable world of H2O, encased within a thick atmosphere of water vapor.
This is cute. It's called the Dumbo Octopus. They are found at around 15000 feet under the sea. They swim fast and they eat sea worms and plankton.
