Toddler Books: No Two Alike by Keith Baker and Snowby Christine Ford. Songs / Rhymes: “Good Morning”, “Hello, How Are You?”, “Open, Shut Them”, “My Mittens”, “Four Little Snowmen Riding on a Sled” on the felt board, “Snowflakes, Snowflakes”, “I Wiggle My Fingers”, and “The More We Get Together”. Craft: Warm Hats. Materials: half of a paper plate, aqua construction paper strip, blue construction paper circle, cotton balls, glue, tape, and crayons. The toddlers colored their plates and glued on the strip and circle. When they were finished, they glued on their cotton balls and pretended it was snow on their hats. The idea came from storytime katie. Special Activity: During the song “Snowflakes, Snowflakes”, I handed out cotton balls and spread out a white sheet on the ground. When the toddlers sang the word “everywhere”, everyone threw their “snowballs” on to the sheet. Preschool Books: Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright. Songs / Rhymes: “Welcome to the Library”, “Hello, How Are You?”, “Open, Shut Them”, “Four Little Snowmen Riding on a Sled”, and “The More We Get Together”. Craft: There was no craft today. We had a special event instead. Special Activity: Over the winter holiday, I set up a table for the Snowflakes for Sandy Hook event. The Connecticut Parent Teacher Student Association had asked for volunteers to donate paper snowflakes in order to help the students of Sandy Hook recover from the tragic events in December. The snowflakes would be used to turn SHES into a winter wonderland. The CTPTSA received such an outpouring of snowflakes that they had to ask volunteers to stop sending them in. Instead, they said, they wanted those who made snowflakes to create their own winter wonderlands. I hung the donated snowflakes from the ceiling of the meeting room. When the preschoolers arrived, I explained the project to them and said that the students of SHES needed good wishes sent to them. In order to do this, we’d have fun playing in our winter wonderland! We sang winter songs, read snowy books, and even had a snowball fight! This book makes such a fun read-aloud, with lots of repetition and humor. Children will love predicting what will happen, using their own schema about seasons, weather and animals to base their predictions. Also useful for legend studies (why rabbits have short tails, why we have pussywillows). Cover implies a winter read, but I like this one at the end of summer as we start to contemplate appreciating the attributes of the season we're in.

CHILDREN"S BOOK: Owl Moon
Guess what? We actually did have a snow day today! It's April-freakin-9th...yet I got to stay home all day today. "How much snow did you get?" I can hear you asking...so let me show you. From my bedroom window... Notice how you can still see the street? And the grass? And the neighbor's driveway? We really didn't get that much snow. But I'm not complaining! A snow day is always appreciated. But it's back to the real world tomorrow. So, since I am back on the work train tomorrow, I want to link up with Amanda and Stacia for the Must Read Mentor Text linky! This week's theme is Language Arts! Our district has really been highlighting mentor texts in many of our PDs about writing. In fact, they highly encourage us to use mentor texts at the beginning of each writing unit we start. When I started teaching, that wasn't something I had ever thought of. But when I learned about mentor texts and how to use them, it made perfect sense! So now we start out each unit learning from published authors about how to write... We usually start with an anchor chart like this: This is our anchor chart for Slice of Life writing - we also call it Personal Narrative. The 3 texts I like to use for mentor texts are: by Jane Yolen by Julie Brinckloe by Patricia Polacco I love all three of these books because they are great examples of Slice of Life writing - they tell a small story with lots of detail and amazing descriptions. Each one is a memory (or memory-like) from the author's childhood. I usually do this in the beginning of the year...and the kids are riveted to the stories because they are so well-written. Plus, the kids get a great example of how their Slice of Life writing will look when they are done. :-) It really helps them to write with a product in mind and to have a great example to learn from! Make sure you head over to share your top picks for mentor texts!
I woke up super excited this morning knowing that it's time for Fiction Friday and Fabulous Find Friday, but then realized today's also Friday the 13th! EEK! Gotta be extra careful today, ha! One of my all-time favorite read alouds is “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen because it can be used to teach several skills. It’s about a little girl who goes “owling” on a winter’s night with her father, and it’s filled with such rich, disruptive language. It’s perfect for teaching visualizing and it serves as a great mentor text for creating sensory images during a word choice unit. I usually put a graphic organizer with all five senses up on the SMARTboard, and we pause every couple of pages to write down mental images we created under the corresponding sense. Several similes and metaphors are found throughout the book, so it is also wonderful for teaching figurative language. “Brave Irene” by William Steig is about a dressmaker’s daughter who goes on a dangerous journey in a blizzard. It’s another one of my favorites because of its descriptive language and “muscle verbs.” As I read it aloud, we pause every so often to record any verbs that are particularly strong in helping us create mental images. I keep the anchor chart up so that students can select some of the verbs to use in their own writing throughout the year. I mentioned before that I’m pretty much OBSESSED with anything Chris Van Allsburg and this is one of my favorites of his. “The Z Was Zapped” is an alphabet play “in 26 acts,” but this is not your typical alphabet book. Each letter is shown on stage undergoing some sort of mishap, and the reader has to turn the page in order to find out what has occurred. After reading it aloud, I challenge my students to create their own class book using even better word choice than the author. Each student gets one letter of the alphabet and creates their own original idea with a sketch of the letter’s mishap and corresponding sentence. This activity is great for teaching alliteration as well because each letter’s mishap has to include that particular letter. Here are a couple examples of what my students came up with. Since I’m on the subject of words and writing, I want to share a bulletin board I had my fifth graders create for finding synonyms for overused words. I’ve seen this idea in several places and don’t know where the original idea came from. My students LOVED this activity and actually used it frequently in their writing. It worked well that we made it in October so it helped with the Halloween room decor. ;) For my Fabulous Find, I'm sharing a circle cutter I just purchased from Michaels yesterday. I LOVE it so far and it made yesterday's project 9 million times easier. You'll have to wait until Monday to see my craft though. ;)

“I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be.” You’ll probably recognize those words from Robert Munsch’s children’s book, Love You Forever. It’s among the best-selling kids’ books of all time, but it still tends to provoke very different responses among parents.
We love Jan Brett's books in our house. They are charming stories with wonderful illustrations. Some of our favorite books are.... Scholastic has a lessons plan on The Mitten that will help students learn sequencing and learn how to predict. We love how the illustrations on the side of the pages show what is happening elsewhere in the story. A mitten coloring page can be found here. A coloring page of mittens and animals can be found on this Jan Brett site. To creat a snow scene, children can take blue od black construction paper and use white paint/crayon to make a winter scene similar to the story. For this story, you can take white air dry clay(Crayola makes an easy clay to work with) and have the kids build an igloo. Make a mural of the arctic. You can find directions and pictures here. This book is a great way to introduce your children to the Inuit people. You can discuss how they live, customs they have, food they eat and where they live. A lesson plan for The Hat can be found at Scholastic. A coloring page for this book can be found at Jan Brett. This is a wonderful story that teaches children that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Teaching our children to be happy with what they have is so important in today's world. All Kids Network has a fun craft to go along with this story. Most of the supplies you probably already have in your house. Check it out here. An alphabet coloring page of Town Mouse, Country Mouse can ber found here. Both of these stories are full of adventure. Making gingerbread cookies would be a great addition to the telling of these two stories. A few years ago I drew a gingerbread picture on poster board and had my kids color and decorate. You can use a variety of media to decorate them...seqins, beads, rick rack, ribbon, buttons, pipe cleaners, pom poms, ect. If they want to turn them into puppets just glue a popsicle stick to the back of the gingerbread man. A blank gingerbread form can be found on this site for those that do not have any drawing abilities. Jan Brett is a wonderful author that writes stories that enchant little ones and older ones. Here is a page that shows a collection of her books. We have read many of her books over and over. After reading several of Jan Brett's books, I asked Lego Man and Princess P to create a picture in the same style Jan Brett uses. We talked about how you can see what the main character is doing, the supporting characters and what will happen when you flip the page. This is what they came up with. Lego Man's Cave Man picture. His favorite book is The First Dog by Jan Brett. There are numerous resources out there to use. An excellent site that has loads and loads of fun stuff to do can be found here. This Jan Brett site has coloring pages, activities, videos, games, recipes and so much more.
The Mitten A Ukrainian Folktale (Book) : Brett, Jan : When Nicki drops his white mitten in the snow, he goes on without realizing that it is missing. One by one, woodland animals find it and crawl in; first, a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse and what happens next makes for a wonderfully funny climax. As the story of the animals in the mitten unfolds, the reader can see Nicki in the boarders of each page, walking through the woods unaware of what is going on. Once again Jan Brett has created a dramatic and beautiful picture book in her distinctive style. She brings the animals to life with warmth and humor, and her illustrations are full of visual delights and details faithful to the Ukrainian tradition from which the story comes.

From chapters.ca: In this spectacular science book, the camera stops the action so young readers can observe what they could not otherwise see: a drop of water as it falls from a faucet; water as a single snowflake; water as a rainbow, steam, frost and dew. Through the beauty of astonishing close- up photography and simple text, art and science combine to explain concepts such as evaporation and condensation.
