This month in our design studio, we had an Ugly Sweater design-off!  I had no clue what I was going to do at first, but got inspired after a trip to the thrift store.  I think my sweater turned out so ugly, that it's actually cute and Chloe is adorable modeling it for the photos.  Let me show you how this project came together... What you need: – Basic plain sweater or sweatshirt (I used a red sweater turtleneck) – 5 men's holiday ties – Aleene's Fabric Fusion Adhesive – Aleene's Fabric Fusion Tape – Buttons – Scissors I started off with a plain blank turtleneck sweater from the thrift store. I was walking around the thrift store trying to think of a way to decorate my sweater that would be different! Then I spotted these holiday ties and right away knew that I needed to make a tree out of them.  I layed my ties down and snipped them to create a tree shape! Next, I got our my Aleene's Fabric Fusion Permanent Fabric Tape. I knew this would be the best tape to position my ties on with...and the best thing is that it's mess-free! I unrolled the sticky side onto each of the backs of my ties along each tie edge. Then simply peeled away the backing and applied the ties to my sweater in the tree fashion. Use the end of the middle tie that you snipped off to make a bow for the top of the tree.  Apply it also using the Fabric Fusion Tape. I used a dab of the Aleene's Fabric Fusion on small buttons and randomly placed them all over my ties to serve as "ornaments". Who knew men's neck ties could look so ugly?  Oh wait...

I still love ties and have started collecting them again. I only ever buy ones I love the pattern for, which is usually very retro, 70's and wide. I also have a price limit, if they are too expensive the op shop misses out. I can't afford to buy 5 ties for over $2.50 each! I made a tie skirt using a lot of my Dad's old ties. I cut the back of the tie out so the skirt would be lighter and not as stiff and also made the length of the ties all different to give a flowy feel. I used another tie for the top of the skirt and inserted a zipper and big button to fasten. My sister had to go one better and make a dress with boning wearing it to the races with matching bow tie headpiece. I had to borrow it myself and also wear it to the races. With the advice from me she left the ties whole and zig-zagged them with the stitching showing, giving it a different, stiffer and textured feel. I love it! I now want to make another dress from ties more casual. Well, the tie quilt is almost finished. (finally) I am stitching the binding, sleeve and label, and then I will be taking this quilt to my brother later this week. So, some thoughts and facts behind this quilt.  A year ago (June 27, 2011) my brothers partner, David passed away.  David was a  pulmonary specialist in the Bay Area, and also an accomplished cello player.  The bag full of ties were David's.  My brother (Dan, he does have a name after all) asked me to make a quilt out of the ties, and he wanted to give the finished quilt to David's sister Joanie. That is how this all started. While blogging about the process of this quilt, I received many comments, the most thoughtful and profound one for me was, "Picture all of the people he helped while wearing the ties."   Wow, this comment gave me a whole new perspective.  My original thoughts on this project were all the memories the ties held for my brother.  Were they gifts, bought on a shopping trip, bought while traveling, worn to a special event?  That kind of thing.  I never thought about how many people were helped while David was wearing these ties. I do go on and on, but after months of this project I have many thoughts.  One of them was what to call this quilt.  I went round and round and ended up with,  "David's Ties".  That summed it all up. Label for the back of the quilt, stitched on tie fabric  Now for some pictures of the almost finished quilt. The setting squares were made from bow ties.  I did feathers in the raw silk sashing, and in the blocks I did mostly stitch in the ditch, and a simple geometric design on the large tie shaped pieces that formed the center of the block.  Because of the prints and all that is going on in the blocks, you don't see the quilting very well, but you sure see it on the back. I used Silk Radiance for the backing, and it is just beautiful.  It actually is a teal color, (this blue is just a trubute to my great photography skills.) I am so pleased with this quilt,  it is 74" square, a nice generous size.  There is a bit more I want to tell you about this project, but some of it is a surprise to my brother, so I will wait until I deliver this and show him first.   Thanks for sharing my journey and progress, it is appreciated.
