There are only about 6,000 humpback whales left in the oceans. In the early 1900s whaling was very popular & over 60,000 whales were killed. Commercial whaling has been banned since the late 1950s, & currently whaling has been minimized significantly. Today the threats include accidental deaths by entanglement in fishing gear or collisions with ships
I am obsessed with whales, Humpbacks are my all time favorite whale species.

Beluga Whale - These white whales are dark grey when they are born and it can take up to eight years before they turn completely white. Also known as “sea canaries,” belugas are one of the most the most vocal of all whales. The beluga is closely related to the narwhal; they are the only two members of the Monodontidae family. Beluga whales’ dives may last up to 25 minutes and can reach depths of 800 meters. The word beluga comes from the Russian word “bielo” meaning white. However, these white whales are born dark gray. It can take up to eight years before they turn completely white.

Man and whale size each other up in the winner of the 2008 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition's underwater category, announced on October 30, 2008. The photo was taken by Brian Skerry on assignment for National Geographic magazine off New Zealand's Auckland Islands, where a "pristine population" of southern right whales, in Skerry's words, was discovered only ten years ago

An acrobatic animal known for breaching and slapping the water with its tail and pectorals. Found in oceans and seas around the world, humpback whales typically migrate up to 16,000 mi each year. Humpbacks feed only in summer, in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter.
Humpbacks come in 4 different color schemes, ranging from white to gray to black to mottled. An average-sized humpback whale will eat 4,400-5,500 pounds of plankton, krill and small, schooling fish each day during the feeding season in cold waters. Humpback whales live at the surface of the ocean, both in the open ocean and shallow coastline waters. When not migrating, they prefer shallow waters. They migrate from warm tropical waters, such as waters off the Florida coast, where they breed and c
