After a series a major battles, the Romano-British warriors were defeated by the Anglo-Saxon invaders, and driven west where they became known in the English language as 'Welsh' - which ironically means foreigner. In Wales they would maintain their Celtic language to this day. Meanwhile, in the area that came to be known as England, a Heptarchy of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms developed. Germanic languages replaced Latin and Celtic tongues as the lingua franca.
