SC.2.E.7.3 - Investigate, observe, and describe how water left in an open container disappears (evaporates), but water in a closed container does not disappear (evaporate). This activity is a quick and inexpensive way for students to see evaporation in process. This experiment can be used as a reinforcer after discussing the reasons for evaporation. The experiment can be done as a class or in small groups.

In our unit about plants, this pumpkin investigation could be utilized to teach students how to look at different types of plants. They would describe the outside, count how many lines there are, describe the inside, and count how many seeds there are. It would be a fun way to get students involved in plant observations.

anchor chart pumpkins. I love this idea for a classroom, you can have the chart up for all of fall and refer to the words used to describe the outside and inside for writing activities. This Pumpkin investigation provides math and reading opportunities. The bottom portion gives the kids ownership over the chart and doing it as a class after reading a fun linked book would give the same feelings.

Magic milk paint - science activity for kids
These magic milk colors have been on our to-do list for a long time (like ever since I first got on Pinterest long). I'm sure you can tell by the photo above, this project is the perfect mix of art, science, and fun. I've seen the idea several places over the last few months but I first spotted it here. I'd highly recommend checking it out (hint: there are two equally exciting bonus activities). It's a good bet you already have everything you need for this one in your kitchen - milk, food coloring, dish soap, and a toothpick. Start off by pouring your milk into a small dish with a lip. We found tupperware lids worked really well. Also, we experimented with a few types of milk (with a baby and a toddler in the house we have non-fat, 2%, and whole on hand at all times) and whole milk definitely worked the best. After the milk is poured, add a few drops of various colors of food coloring all around your dish. Now comes the "magic" toothpick. Dip said toothpick in a little dish soap and ask your kiddo to put it in the food coloring. The reaction of the soap disrupting the surface tension of the milk causes the colors to radiate away from the toothpick. The more you dip, the more the colors swirl and mix. Trust me when I tell you, the results are pretty spectacular. Eventually, your milk will start to look like this as the colors begin to muddle together. Which means it's time for a fresh dish. We did this activity three times total and this blue/green/yellow version was my favorite. Once the color-mixing excitement was over, we did what we ultimately end up doing with a lot of art projects and turned it into painting time. A few paper towels on top of a cookie sheet is our go-to canvas. Thanks again to Our Best Bites, you made our afternoon! Will you guys be trying this one soon? As always, let me know if there's a project you love or want us to try.

#DIY LEAF ART: Pick leaf or leaves you want to use. Apply small amount of craft paint in colors of your choice to leaf. Using plastic wallpaper smoother, gently but firmly smooth coated leaf onto paper or canvas surface. Carefully remove leaf. Allow to dry completely. Seal with matte sealer.
Big Leaf Printing use the lid of a cake pan to hold the paint (acrylics in a variety of colors). The children were free to add colors as they liked...just a bit, spread around works very well. Leaf Then the children pressed the leaf into the ink...I used a big leafed plant in my garden (I have no idea what it is) but a rhubarb leaf would work very well. (Edited to add...thank you to Monika for pointing out that rhubarb leaves are toxic and should not be used for this project.) Then we transfered the leaf to the paper. The children really need to press down all around the leaf...making sure to press all the way to the corners. It takes a minute or two for small hands to be able to do this. Carefully lift the leaf off the paper. Leafprint The results of the mixed colors are striking.
