Black silk crepe dress for half-mourning, with black and cream silk edging and black lace at neck, by Lucile, English, 1910-12. Worn by Miss Heather Firbank (1888-1954), daughter of the MP Sir Thomas Firbank and sister of the novelist Ronald Firbank. The dress is a half-mourning dress, meaning that it was worn in the later stages of mourning. Mourning etiquette was well controlled and what could be worn at each stage was rigidly prescribed.
Beautiful draping in this Edwardian dress

40S Silhouette, Buckingham Palace
In March 1941, the United States had not yet entered the war, so the textile collection was intended to provide financial support to the Corps so they could transport injured troops. The textile collection was also a gesture of support to beleaguered British citizens who had suffered under Nazi bombing. Other featured slogans included "Bravo Britain" and "Friends Across the Sea," in colors called English Channel blue and Buckingham Palace red.

Sometimes the simplest things are the most exquisite. Like the placement of the shirring by the yoke of the orange dress. (Although I'm positively in love with the fabric of the dress opposite the orange one.)

Beachwear (view 2), Jantzen (American, founded 1910): 1955, American, cotton. "As opposed to earlier versions of the bathing suit, later designs were more close-fitting and showed the wearer's skin, as getting a tan was part of the beach-going experience. This bathing ensemble...was made by... Jantzen for their 1955 'Orientale' collection. Complete with a separate skirt that could be worn while strolling along the boardwalk, this ensemble is a good example of the beach culture of the period."
